"Since when the hell have white women ever been unnatural?" Zane questioned with a furrowed brow.
"See?! Why couldn't that have been his response?"
He leaned back in his poolside chaise and crossed his legs at the ankles. I couldn't see much of his eyes behind those douchy Oakley blades but I knew that he was bothered. Zane took a deep breath. "Okay. Let's hear his feeble defense."
" 'Plenty of white women should embrace their natural beauty as well'," I reiterated with a mock of Grant's deep country accent.
"Oh my God," he said with a shake of his head. "I'm embarrassed for him. I don't get why he can't understand that a lot of issues like this are just white women's way of trying to remain relevant. I mean, they can't have everything."
"It's really just that simple," I agreed with a roll of my eye. I joined his lounging position in my own chair and stared out at the crystal waters of the pool.
"I mean, I love my people. I guess. But sometimes I wish they would leave shit alone. Something like that shouldn't even have been considered. Where did that even come from?"
"I had the misfortune of stumbling upon it in my YouTube feed. The comments section drove me crazy. All these white girls talkin' shit."
"Like what?"
"I saw one woman say 'No one wants to be apart of your little nappy hair movement, anyways. We'll start our own.' And another said 'I'm still claiming the natural hair movement as an all inclusive movement.' I better not catches these heifers on the street."
"You can't be getting into any physical altercations. You're in the public eye now, remember?"
I threw my head against the headrest. "Fuck they bitch ass."
"Honestly, it kinda feels like Canterbury is making a novelty of your relationship."
"I think that's quite obvious, but what makes you say that?"
"Because you're an interracial couple. Progressing Southern cities like us like to capitalise on the idea of social evolution and the tolerance we so humbly display."
"Brisah and Isaac would be a much more appropriate couple to dangle in front of progression."
He snorted. "Oh, you talking about that spoiled rotten princess and her hillbilly frog prince? Yeah right. Brisah? Definitely. Isaac? Hell no. He's considered way too low class to be recognised as one of Canterbury's upstanding gentlemen. And his family history is way too messy. They would never market that. But you and Grant. Perfect," he gestured with his hand.
"Well I know that I'm perfect. G could use some refinement, however."
"Will you ever change?" Z laughed.
"Why on earth for? Your brother seems to be absolutely content with my abrasiveness."
"As am I," he grinned, reminding me of Grant.
"How're things with Pearly Ann?"
"Stagnant as always."
"Y'all's relationship is stranger than me and Grant's was in the beginning."
"I can agree with that."
Pearly Ann and Zane engaged in the average on again/ off again relationship and have been since way back when. They would get into some big argument and one of them (Pearly Ann usually) would declare their union an end until the other (Zane usually) begged for forgiveness.
I will never understand why Zane puts so much time and effort into Pearly Ann. I personally never felt she was worth it.
But I stay out of it. Zane and Pearly Ann having been so involved with Grant and our relationship is one of the reasons we almost broke up for good. However, if Zane asked for my advice, I always provided it. Not for the sake of their relationship but for his own happiness and peace of mind.
