6 1/2 hours later. July 27, 1979. Colorado Springs, Colorado. 11: 45 a.m.
As soon as I arrived at the arena, I was overwhelmed by how busy it was. Buses, pick ups, cars and jeeps filled the parking lots and people bustled around excited about the tryouts.
For some reason, I was not as nervous as I expected myself to be. I was confident in my skills and knew I was ready. I was just slightly anxious for being the only girl here. I knew attention was going to be focused on me for that reason and I wasn't going to let arrogant and sexist opinions stop me from making the olympic team.
As I walked towards the arena and entered the nerves I was feeling before sky rocketed.
I snapped out of it and looked around the room, my eyes connecting with a pair of soft grey ones. I felt my breath hitch and quickly looked away, taking in the massive crowd once again. I heard some voices and laughter close to me and then I realized that a group of guys were staring at me.
Thats when I clued in that I was still standing in the doorway.
" Shit " I cursed under my breath, embarrassed that they had just seen me like that.
Great, not even here for 5 minutes and I've already made a fool of myself. I quickly moved away out of the doorway and took a brave step into the crowd. There were guys running all over the place, either rushing to find a dressing room, or get signed in.
A few stopped to stare at me and they gave me weird looks, but I just ignored them. I already knew before coming here that most of the guys wouldn't be happy about me trying out.
I looked over at the group of guys who were still looking at me, and blushed when I noticed one of the guys was staring at me intensely, looking like he was definitely checking me out.
He was kinda cute too.
Wait- no, I am not being like Lindsay right now! I need to focus on hockey.
Now..where do I check in?
But I couldn't focus. I couldn't help but get butterflies in my stomach when I noticed that guy was still staring at me.
The guy was now whispering something to his friends which caught my attention immediately. They were all smiling at me and I started rubbing my hands on my thighs nervously. Was something on maybe on my face?
Then our eyes locked.
We held our gaze for all of a few seconds but it felt much longer than that. He was gorgeous. The guy smirked again and my stomach did more flips.
This boy was definitely the cutest hockey player I have ever laid eyes on. He had a sharp jawline that really complimented his toned body. His hair was the typical hockey player style, flowing in soft blonde curls. His eyes were a soft blue colour that were almost a grey colour. He was unbelievably handsome.
I continued to stare at blondie and blushed when I realized how foolish I must look. I moved towards the side and set my bag down on the floor, looking down at my watch to check the time. I causally glanced back over at blondie, who was still looking at me. A smile spread across my lips and I looked at him and was surprised when he winked back at me.
I blushed immediately and quickly averted my gaze to the wall. OMG...what is happening right now.
I rolled my eyes, pulling myself together. Alright, I need to sign in but first I need to find it. I already called in and my name is on the tryout roster, but I need to still sign their papers.
I needed to find the booth where you sign in at...but I couldn't really see the front of the room because of all these people that were packed into this small lobby. I bit my lip in frustration and scanned the room looking for any signs that would tell me where to check in. All I could see was the flash of a camera near the front of the room.
