"I think we like to complicate things when it is really quite simple; find what it is that makes you happy and who it is that makes you happy and you're set. Promise." -Anonymous

"What the hell! What are you doing here?"

"I, uh- I thought you were Rusty". Slowly I back away.

"Why would I be Rusty? You do know where you are, don't ya?" Rusty must not have told him we were coming.

"I'm sorry. Rusty told me to meet him here at midnight. I didn't know you would be here". He turns on the lamp and stands up.

"I don't understand why he would..." His voice trails off when he looks at my lack of clothing. "You sure move on quickly."

"He's my boyfriend Brennan, we were never together. And why would you care? You never liked me anyways". I'm desperately trying to keep calm. I don't won't to cry for the third time today.

"I didn't say I did." He shrugs. "You seemed so heartbroken earlier"

My blood is boiling to a point where I scream "It's not heartbreak if I don't love you!"

He doesn't pause as he screams back "Well I love you!"

He has to be lying. Brennan Fletcher doesn't even like me, let alone love me. He isn't capable of loving another human being.

He closes the space between us with a kiss. A breath-taking, extraordinary, inconceivable, splendid, daunting, and appalling kiss.

No, no. I force myself to pull away.

"I sorry, Em." It seems that's all he ever has to say to me, he's sorry.

"No you're not. if you were sorry you wouldn't keep doing this."

He sighs. "You're right." Of course Im right, but it is unlike him to admit it. "I'm not sorry I kissed you. What I am sorry about is staying away for seven years." He shakes his head. "I don't understand you, you're like a puzzle with missing pieces. You make me frustrated but at the same time I want to be the one to put you together.

"He gave this to me tonight", I say holding out my left hand.

"You're getting married?" His jaw is practically on the floor.

"What? No. It's a promise ring."

"Good. You know it's just a piece of metal with a title. Promises can be broken. We could be together if we want to!"

I didn't think he would understand. "That's why we could never be together; we're too different. Like opposites! Like the same charged sides of magnets. We can't love each other."

"Are you kidding? That's exactly why we would be so good. Opposites attract!" I completely just stepped into that.

"We hate each other, remember?"

"NO! You aren't hearing me".

"That's because I don't wanna listen! I just need to be happy with Rusty and not you".

"What you need isn't always what you want".

"Screw you asshole!", I yell.

The front door swings open and reveals a wide-eyed Rusty. "Jesus Emma, put some damn clothes on! What are you guys doing?"

Bren states at him for a moment before answering. "I hope you break the bitch's heart." I gasp at his cruel words and Rusty doesn't waste a second. He marches over to him and punches him in the center if his face. There is a splattering of blood all over his mothers white couch. For the third time today, my eyes begin to water.
