Three hours have passed, and the rotters haven't moved on. They are still growling and clawing at us.
"Great plan!" Sammy growled at Mark.
I looked over to Shawn, "We need to do something." I said over the growls. Shawn went to speak, but was cut off by a blood curdling scream. I jumped, startled by it, then quickly glanced around. For a moment I thought it was someone from my group, but they were all still lying around me. Another scream erupted again to our left, this time catching the attention of the rotters. The began shuffling towards the screams.
As soon as the majority of the rotters were gone, we all jumped to our feet.
"Lets go." Shawn said, helping us all off of the trailer. I jumped down last, and pulled out my knife, some of the rotters were still mulling around us. Shawn grabbed my hand and we began to run. He was in front of me and didn't notice a Rotter stumble out of the woods after him. I ran up quickly and sliced into the rotters head, grime sprayed everywhere. Shawn spun his head around, "Thanks." I just nodded at him and we kept running.
After a few minutes of running, Shay slowed down, and we stopped. She was bent over wheezing, "I really need to work on my cardio."
I kneeled down on the pavement, "Same." I breathed, holding my aching side. We all stopped for a few minutes to catch our breath.
"Let's just get to the city and find a place to sleep." Sammy said beginning to walk again.
When we finally got into the city, everything looked strange to me. I've never seen an actual sky scrapers before, they really did look like they touched the sky.
"We should search a few of these buildings first. Maybe we can find some food." Mark said walking up to a store front.
Mark, Sammy and Shay went to walk into a store. When Shawn pointed next door. "I'm going to check this one out."
"Not alone you're not!" I snapped, following him in.
I turned on my flashlight and shined it around the small store. By the looks of it, it use to be a coffee shop.
"I doubt there's anything here."
Shawn shrugged, "You never know, maybe someone hid something good in here." I nodded and began looking around, but all I seen were cans of coffee and fancy mugs.
I moved my flashlight around and noticed Shawn watching me. We looked at each other for a moment before he spoke up.
"Do you still want to die?" His question threw me, this was the first time he brought up what I had done.
"Uh..." did I still want to die? I know I use to want to... When everything happened. But do I still? "I don't know." I said quietly.
He shook his head, seeming disappointed, "I'm here for you Lainey. I know you don't think you have anything left, but you do." He turned away from me and started looking for more supplies.
I walked back into the coffee shops small kitchen, and seen some dusty cans sitting on top of a counter. I shoved them into my bag and walked back out front. "This place is empty, let's try the next building." I said, walking towards the door.
Shawn and I were almost out of the front door, when we heard Shay yelling from next door. "We've gotta go!" We ran outside to see rotters coming from all over.
"They must have been hiding behind the buildings." Shawn said, pushing me out the door. When I got a better look, I realized there were way more rotters than we could handle. "Shit!" Shawn hissed, grabbing my arm and pulled me after him.
As we all ran, some of the rotters would get too close. So we would take them down as we went. The others in our group were quite a ways in front of us, and Shawn was a few feet in front of me. I watched a Rotter get too close to him so I grabbed it by it's shirt collar, getting it's attention. It whirled around, and I quickly plunged my knife into it's eye. Shawn grabbed my arm, pushing me forwards. "They are on top of that cube van! Get there!"
I stumbled over a dead Rotter, then ran towards the truck. When I got to the truck, the others were already on top of it. Before I crawled up, I turned to see Shawn wasn't right behind me. I glanced around quickly and seen him fighting off a small group of Rotters.
I ran back towards the group of Rotters around Shawn and sank my knife into ones skull. We took a few more down, then I grabbed Shawns hand and we ran towards the truck.
Shawn got in front of me and shoved the rotters that got to close to us to the ground. I watched Shawn get to the front of the truck, but out of nowhere a huge Rotter came up and plowed into me, knocking me to the ground. I tried to crawl backwards, to get enough room to stand. Before I could, the rotter stumbled and fell right on top of me, squashing all the air I had in me, out. I struggled, trying to hold it off of me, while it was snapping at my face. "Shit. Shit. Shit." I wheezed. I looked up to see another Rotter trip and fall on top of me. I couldn't breathe and it was all I had to hold them off of me. Seconds later, I heard one gunshot, then two. Blood splattered across my face, but the rotters fell limp.
I watched Shawn quickly pull the dead rotters off of me, then he pulled me to my feet. "Come on!" He shouted, this time holding my arm and not letting go as we ran. When we got to the truck, Shawn practically threw me on top of the hood, and I scurried to the roof. He was up right after me.
The others were now lying flat of their backs on the back of the truck. Shawn and I fell on our backs panting, his fingers laced with mine. After a moment I turned to him.
"I want to live...." He nodded and squeezed my hand. I want to live.
