As soon as I woke up, I quickly woke the others. "Let's go find Mike." I said pulling on my shoes.
"Yes lets. Mike's cute." Shay said smiling. I rolled my eyes playfully at her. Then we all crawled out of the tent. I'm glad she's feeling better, sad Shay is a strange thing.
We walked back outside, and Shay spotted Mike up on his guard post. "Morning Mike!" She called up. Mike smiled down at us and hurried down the ladder.
"Okay, I'll give you the tour, then we will end at your new place. I hope you don't mind, but you three will be sharing a house."
"We don't mind." I replied.
Mike pointed at the bunker, "The people who lived in the bunker before we opened it, still stay in the living district. Plus the new comers who chose to stay inside in their tents. They still work on purifying the water, and making other things we need. The hospital is inside also. Everything else is out here." He walked a few feet to the left, to the end of the bunker. "Down there is the guard shack. It's got all our weapons, there's two people on guard there 24/7. He turned and pointed to the gardens we came through. "This is clearly the garden, and some of the guards chose to sleep out here in tents instead of inside. We harvest half of the garden, then can the rest for winter." We walked to the right, and began walking down the right side of the bunker.
Down the side of the bunker were animal pens. Filled with pigs, chicken, a few cows, and even horses. On the other side of the path, the fences were there.
"So this whole place is fenced in?" I asked.
"Yes ma'am. We do a walk through twice a day to make sure it's not compromised. Don't want the dead getting inside." Mike replied.
"Or the tigers." I muttered.
Past the animal pens, there were a few more larger gardens.
"You grow alot of food." Shawn said.
"We've got alot of mouths to feed here." Mike replied. "Were working on expanding the fences, but we want to keep it safe."
We walked through the crop fields.
"Trailer houses." Shay spoke aloud.
"Yep. As soon as Charles learned the plague was gone, he sent workers out to find supplies. They found a mobel home lot a few miles from here and we had a few people here who knew how to move them. So they moved a whole bunch in and we've been using them for over flow. Alot of em are filled, but we got a few left."
Mike lead us to a trailer, "This is yours." We all stepped inside, "There's running water, and the septic works. There's power too, but we ask you to keep the lights low at night. We don't want to attract unwanted attention." Mike stepped back outside, "I'll let you guys get comfortable. Come see me when your ready and we will talk about jobs."
As soon as Mike left, the three of us began looking through our new home. "Actual homes are way better then those small bunker apartments." I said walking around. It was a nice home, the best part about it was the tub for me. Shay was the first one to point out that there are only two bedrooms. She wiggled her eyebrows at me.
"I'll take the couch." I said quickly, trying to hide my blushing cheeks. I seen Shawn grin at me, but I ignored him.
"Well before we do anything else, I'm showering." Shay said, hurrying off.
After we were all squeaky clean, we sat on the couch in our new living room.
"I'm glad we finally made it." I said quietly.
"Yeah me too." Shay agreed.
Shawn stood up, "We should go see about jobs."
Mike was back at his guard post, "Y'all ready for jobs?" He called down.
"Yes." Shay hollered up. Mike crawled down, and lead us to the office we were in last night. Charles was waiting at his desk.
"Hello, Mike tells me you guys are ready for jobs. We have plenty available, part are inside here, and the others are outside. Do you have any previous experience with anything?"
"I'm a doctor... or well I was, back in the town I lived in. I wasn't certified legally but I've been doing it for years." Shay said.
"Okay we can always use doctors." He turned to Shawn and I. "What about you two?" Before Shawn could say anything, I spoke up.
"I can go on runs or be a guard. I used to be one in the bunker." I lied, but I wasn't going to be stuck inside or working with the animals again. I've been stuck Inside all my life, I don't want to be inside anymore.
"Well your in luck, because our guards are the ones who go on runs."
"I'll be a guard as well." Shawn said quickly.
"Fantastic!" Charles said, turning to Mike. "Take Shay over to the hospital, and get her set up."
As soon as Mike and Shay left, Charles turned to us. "Since you two are going to be out protecting us, I feel you need to know what's going on." I glanced at Shawn, his jaw was clenched, he looked mad. "We've been having a problem with another group."
"What kind of problem?" Shawn asked.
"Well a few months ago, a rough group showed up. They said they wanted what we have. And if we didn't give it to them, they would come and take it. They gave us a few days, and when we didn't give them the bunker, they attacked. Nobody really won, both sides lost alot of people. But now they show up randomly and attack some of us. We've tried to find their hide out, but we haven't had any luck on that. They've got the people and the guns." I leaned back thinking it over. They have been attacked, and will surly be again... I thought we were safe here.
"So your in a damn turf war?" Shawn snapped.
"Pretty much, but we're working on finding them. When we do, we will end this problem." Charles clapped his hands together, "But for today, you two can just go home and get adjusted. Tomorrow, Mike will give you refresher courses and then put you to work."
Shawn and I went to walk out, then Charles stopped us. "Oh wait." He went to a cabinet and pulled out our guns. "Here Are your weapons back. I've also reloaded them and here is more ammo."
"Thank you." I said as we left.
Shawn walked a few feet ahead of me. I glanced at him, he still looked tense. Why? When we got back home, Shawn walked in and slammed his stuff down on the table. I jumped at the noise, "What's wrong?"
He glared at me, "Why did you say you were a guard? Why would you take that job?"
"Um, because I don't want to be stuck inside 24/7." Why is he so angry with me?
"Yeah, but a guard is a dangerous job! Especially here! I mean come on! A damn turf war?" He shook his head, "You're not being a guard."
I was shocked by his reaction, and the fact he thought he could make my decisions for me. "Last time I checked, you weren't in charge of me." I can't believe he is trying to control me.
"I'm not going to let you."
I rolled my eyes at him, "Oh get off it Shawn! I can take care of myself, I'm not a damn child!"
"Yeah right."
I glared at him, "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"You know." He snapped. I felt my heart drop, he was talking about the pills. He's never once thrown that in my face.
"When you chill the hell out and can actually talk to me like a normal human being, then come find me." I turned and stormed out the front door, slamming it as hard as I could. Dramatic, I know, but he pissed me off.
