Chapter 21- New Beginnings

It had been 7 weeks since the announcement and both Kat and Stephen had returned to work. However, Kat was not working out in the field she had returned to helping Newt in the infirmary and helping with any little duties around the ARC. Luckily the morning sickness had passed however Kat was not liking the aches and pain she was getting especially as her ankles were the size of water balloons. Apart from that Kat was feeling okay...up until the 18 weeks range, Kat was still working out frequently with the help of Becker and Newt who were eager to help as they know that Kat has struggled with the way she looks before. She was now 20 weeks pregnant. She was still exercising but only stretches and small weights for her arms. It's early Friday morning and Kat and Stephen are currently sat in the doctors, waiting to be called into their 20-week scan. They were overly excited as they were able to find out the gender of their baby.
"Katherine Lester Hault" The nurse called, making Kat and Stephen get up to follow her into the scan room. Stephen helped Kat onto the bed and the nurse got to work. She squirted the gel on Kat's stomach and started the scan. Both Kat and Stephen were over the moon when their baby's heart rate echoed throughout the room.
"Are we wanting to know the gender today?" The nurse asked. Both Kat and Stephen said yes in unison as they had previously decided that they didn't want to do anything special for the reveal they had invited their friends round for dinner late that night.
"And it's a...girl!" The nurse said happily. Kat's eyes watered as Stephen smiled.
"It's a girl..." He whispered excitedly as he wiped away his own tears.
"Right...you're next scan will be in 6 weeks." The nurse said, having finished the scan.
"Thank you" The couple said, as they excited the office. The walked out of the surgery, having booked their next scan, hand in hand. Stephen stopped Kat.
"You okay?" Kat asked, noticing that he still had tears in his eyes.
"I'm just really happy..." He said, as Kat pulled him in for a hug.
"She's going to have you wrapped around her little finger" Kat said laughing as they couple made their way to the car. Kat's hand was rested on her now visible baby bump. Stephen laughed and nodded his head as he helped her into the car.
"Home or Arc?" He asked her.
"Ermm...ARC I want to tell everyone. Then I'll get Newt or someone to bring me home. I just want to sleep" Kat said, hiding a yawn. Stephen nodded and started to 10-minute drive to the ARC. When they arrived, they realised that the team was out in the field, so they headed to Lester's office.
"Hey...so we have something for you" Kat said, sitting down whilst she handed Lester the latest scan photo.
"It's a girl..." Kat said excitedly.
"Congratulations" Lester said, shaking Stephens hands before he pulled Kat in for a hug.
"I presume you want to tell the others. They'll be back soon" Lester said, as the three of them exited their office.
"I'll see you later Lester" Kat said before walking off to Jess. She told Jess the good news before her and Stephen made their way to their office. Stephen had asked Jess to send everyone to their office when they got back. When Stephen and Kat got to their office, they both sat down at their desks and got on with any paperwork they had to do.
"Uhh..." Kat said suddenly, placing a hand on her stomach.
"You okay?" Stephen asked, practically leaping out of his chair to Kat's side.
"Yeah...here feel" Kat responded, grabbing his hand and placing it where hers was.
"It that?"
"Yeah...she's kicking" Kat said as her eyes filled with tears of joy.
"Oh my god!" Stephen said in shock. He smiled and gave Kat a kiss. Just then there was a knock on the door. Kat looked up before buzzing open the door.
"Hey guys!" She said, getting up to usher them inside.
"Everything alright? Jess said you wanted to see us all..." Becker said, as he followed everyone else – including Jess – inside the office.
"Yeah – we had our 20-week scan today and we found out something that we wanted to share..." Kat said, reaching for the scan pictures. She looked at Stephen who smiled before they both turned to everyone.
"We're having a girl!" Kat squealed.
"Really?" Jess squeaked, moving to hug Kat. Stephen handed everyone a scan photo.
"Congrats guys!" Connor said, hugging Kat and man hugging Stephen. Once everyone had congratulated the couple, Kat went to gran something from her desk draw.
"Oh – and you two. Happy 4 years anniversary!" Kat said, handing two individual presents to Connor and Abby. They both looked shocked.
"Thank you" Abby said, hugging her friends.
"Right – we've booked a table for dinner. We're all going out!" Matt said, surprising the couple further. Everyone agreed and went home to get ready. It was currently 6pm and the table was booked for 8. Kat and Stephen went home. They both had showers and got dressed. Kat hesitated when choosing something to wear as she wanted to look nice whilst still being comfortable with her now very visible bump. After choosing what she wanted to wear, she got dressed and left with Stephen. Everyone met up at the restaurant and enjoyed celebrating their friend's anniversary. Everyone was happy and laughing. It was great to have a break from everything.
