Chapter Seven: His and Hers
Greenhorn led them to a very tall and grand stone building near the palace. The four of them approached the door and a guard stood watch. “May I ask if you have an invitation to stay at the Royale Inn?” The guard asked very politely as they reached him.
“The Council told me to bring these three here and they were to each have a room on the Council’s charge.” The guard recognized Greenhorn as a member of the Council and allowed them entry. Greenhorn turned to the three of them. “You three are old enough to care for yourselves. I know you do not need a babysitter. If you can gain entry to the inn, you can check in at the front desk. I am going to adjourn to my residence here in the city. Please do not leave the Inn tomorrow without a Council member. It may not be me but a Council member will escort you around tomorrow. Sleep well and rest up because just as Infernal Flamestrike said, these next few days may be the last you have to rest for a long time.”
Greenhorn left the three of them standing in the doorway. Volde opened the door to the inn and they all stepped in. The lobby area was fantastic. The floors were covered with red velvet and everything was made of wood. The lobby was lit by flame encapsulated within different colored fabrics. The main desk lay directly in front of the door. No one was attending the desk.
“Hello, can someone help us please?” Volde shouted aloud. It took several minutes until a man in night clothes stepped out of a room behind the desk area.
“May I help you young lads and lass?” The man seemed very confused at seeing the three of them in the lobby. Volde stepped forward.
“Yes, the Council told us that there would be three rooms available for us here. They told us that they would front the bill.” The man seemed even more confused now as he checked his papers on the desk. “We are surprise guests here in Capitol we arrived just an hour ago.” The man looked up and nodded.
“Well, the doorman allowed you to pass so I assume your claim is honorable. You will be needing three rooms then.” He muttered to himself as he once again examined the papers on his desk. He spun around quickly a minute later and ushered them three keys. “Second floor, all the rooms are available. Those keys are universal so take whichever room you wish.” The man wrote something down on the paper, turned toward the room he came from, and left the three of them standing in the lobby.
Volde handed Tempest and Scarlet each a key and rushed toward the stairs. Tempest and Scarlet grabbed each other’s hand and walked together up the stairs. By the time they had arrived on the second floor, Volde had already disappeared. They walked down the hall a ways and Tempest peeked into one of the rooms. The rooms were much like the lobby but with less light. The bed was large enough for two and had many pillows and blankets adorning it.
“I’m going to take this room. Seems pretty nice. I’ll talk to you tomorrow some time.” He turned to go in the room but Scarlet did not let go of his hand. She didn’t want to let go. The two of them locked eyes and just stared at each other for a full minute.
“Tempest, I don’t want to sleep alone.” Scarlet whispered not wanting to break the silence. Tempest pulled her closer to him and held her for a moment outside his door. She looked up into his eyes. His face was scarred still from the fight, but it just made him more human. She felt his strong yet tender embrace against her.
“I will protect you.” He whispered in her ear. It sent a chill down her spine. The two of them went into his room and shut the door behind them. Scarlet kicked off her shoes, removed her wool socks, and moved to the bed. She patted the bed next to her. Tempest took the seat and winced in pain.
