Chapter Four: Departure

She reached the cottage and the three of them were waiting outside standing in a small circle fenced in next to Greenhorn’s cottage. Greenhorn beckoned her forward into the fenced in area. She moved over and jumped over the small fence.

“Thank you, Scarlet. You made good time. Do you have everything you need?” Scarlet nodded and walked over to Tempest. She placed her head on his shoulder. The only person she had left that she cared about in this world was Tempest. Her parents and sister were marked for death. The only sense of security she knew was Tempest. “Good. Volde if you wouldn’t mind, could you perform a dark shimmer around this area? Do not include the fence.”

Volde dropped his pack and walked around the circle. His hands went to his eyes and by using the shadow behind his sunglasses he placed a dark shimmering essence around the circle that expanded up nearly six feet. When he was done he moved back to his pack and simply nodded at Greenhorn.

“Scarlet, could you also provide some cover for us as well?” Scarlet left Tempest’s side and followed the same circle that Volde walked. She bent the air behind his shimmer to vibrate so quickly that it looked as if an invisible wall was surrounding them.

“Tempest, I gather that you brought some weapons?” Tempest, unfortunately, looked dumbstruck.

“I never was able to have any weapons at home. I only used what the instructor gave me.” Tempest sounded rather disappointed that he would not be able to assist in defending themselves.

“Well, that is quite alright!” Greenhorn then took his hands, clapped them together, and placed them on the solid ground. Nothing happened for a few moments but suddenly solid stone rose up from under the earthen ground. He took the stone and shaped it into a very sturdy sword. “Well, try it out.” He said handing the newly crafted weapon to Tempest.

Tempest wielded the sword with ease. Tempest raised a finger in signal to wait. He grasped the hilt in both hands and slammed the stone sword’s edge to the ground. A large divot was cut into the hard ground. “One sure way to figure out if a sword is built for combat is to strike something that is harder than the opponent’s flesh.”

“Shall we depart then?” Greenhorn asked not necessarily waiting for a reply. “You all may want to be seated for a moment.” The three of them all sat close to Greenhorn. Greenhorn repeated his gesture against the ground and they all felt the ground they were sitting on shake. They looked around and realized that the ground they were sitting on was being raised into the air.

“This is how you left so quickly and quietly all the time.” Volde expressed as he was always very curious how it was that the Elder would leave the village and be back with no notice.

“Yes, my secret is out, a small earthen flying disc. Most earthen Elementalists cannot do this technique…”

“Well, it seems impossible without an air Elementalist here. How are you able to fly it?” Scarlet interjected.

“Well, what most earthen Elementalists believe is that we can only create and control the earth that is still connected to the earth. That is why you see large earthen steps made by some masters and buildings like my cottage that are still connected to the ground. I found out that if there is any form of earth, be it stone, dirt, or mineral, I can control it. Which is how I am able to levitate and move this large disc.”

They were underway. The large disc rose far above the ground and above the tall trees. Scarlet stood up and moved to her shimmering wall of air. She looked down below at the village she once called home. As they rose higher the village became difficult to see. They started to move slowly forward and the village had vanished into the distance.
