Chapter Twenty-One: The Mind’s Eye

It had worked. The scene slowly came into light. They had traveled into Ruby’s mind’s vision. The scene was different then hers however. It was an actual room instead of Scarlet’s that went to eternity. The room was lit with a single fire hanging from the ceiling. The room was relevant in size to the ritual chamber. Scarlet looked to her right and saw that Xaphana arrived a moment later beside her.

“I must warn you, Scarlet. I think your plan is sound. I do not however know if my sister will submit even through the same amount of torture that you put me through.”

“I understand. What are our options then?”

“Kill my sister. It will most likely save your sister’s life.” Scarlet understood what needed to be done. A few moments later and Ruby and Orthona materialized in front of them.

“A clever trick, young human, but will it be enough.” Orthona made a mad dash toward Scarlet and Xaphana simply tackled her sister to the ground. Xaphana looked over at Scarlet and nodded to her while she had Orthona pinned to the ground.

Scarlet quickly ran over to Ruby who was lying on the ground and had not moved since she had materialized. “Ruby, little sis, wake up now.”

“I’m so tired though, Scarlet.” Scarlet was so relieved. Her sister was still alive.

“I know you are, little sis, but I need you to wake for just a little bit so I can get you to do something for me.” Scarlet was in a rush because Xaphana and Orthona’s battle was intensifying and Xaphana was much slower than her sister. Ruby sat up and opened her eyes. Scarlet looked into Ruby’s eyes and saw her shining blue eye’s staring back at her. “Okay, now Ruby, I need you to make a rod out of fire like this.” She created the same rod that she had tortured Xaphana with. Ruby struggled to even hold her hand up for very long but she was able to make the rod of fire.

Scarlet’s face lit up. She took Ruby’s hand and positioned the rod toward her side. She pushed the rod inside. Ruby did not feel any pain. She was right. Her fire could not hurt herself. She continued to push and then she heard an awful scream from across the room. Scarlet looked over and saw Orthona on the ground screaming in pain. Orthona raised her head and saw what Scarlet was doing with Ruby. She began to run over to her. Scarlet stabbed into Ruby’s side over and over again. Orthona fell and slid across the floor as the pain struck her.

Scarlet looked over at Xaphana. Xaphana took a deep breath and nodded her head. Scarlet pushed the rod all the way through the stone and Orthona’s scream filled the room. Scarlet stabbed through the stone several more times and the scream persisted throughout. Scarlet took one final push through and a low groan as loud as the screams came out and then silence fell across the room. Scarlet gestured for Xaphana to check if she was dead. She walked over and looked down at the body. Xaphana kneeled down and placed her hand on her sister’s forehead. Xaphana closed her eyes and the corpse of Orthona slowly disintegrated.

Scarlet noticed that Orthona’s body was not simply disintegrating it was being absorbed by Xaphana. She looked back at Ruby and she had lain back down to sleep. She checked her pulse and it was clear that she was still breathing. It worked. She was able to kill the demon within her sister. Her sister would live. Xaphana walked slowly back over to where the two of them were.

“She’ll be okay.” Scarlet said as Xaphana approached.

“Master, I have more power to give to you now.” Xaphana said in a low tone. “We still have one more job to do.” Scarlet nodded and closed her eyes.
