I was twelve when my parents divorced.

I should have known my life would turn upside down as soon as mom and dad quit talking to each other. But when you are twelve, you don't think about those things.

You get so caught up in the dumb little rumors around school. The growing up. Even friends who suddenly quit coming to your house.

Your parents are the ones who are supposed to comfort you from all of that. They should protect you. Should.

I should have known something was wrong as soon as mom started to camp out in my room. I should've noticed when she couldn't stand to be in the same room as my dad. But I didn't.

That is until I came home from school one day to find mom's car packed full of stuff. Pillows, blankets, bags of clothes. My stuff mixed in with hers.

"Mom? Where are we going?" I remember asking as soon as I walked inside my house.

Dad was sitting in the kitchen staring at the wall. I knew it didn't seem good.

Mom got up off the couch and walked towards me. She looked nervous, but tried her best to hide it by smiling.

"We're going to Phoenix for a while..." it seemed like she was trying to choose her words carefully.

"Is dad coming with?" I asked her. I hoped she would say yes, but the look on her face made it seem like that's the exact question she wished I wouldn't ask.

Dad stepped in, and she looked a little relieved when he spoke.

"Bella, come here for a minute." I did as he asked, and sat at the table with him. "I need to stay here because of my job. Your mom has a better opportunity in Phoenix, but she needs you with her. She can provide better for you, than I can. I'm just to busy here. I promise I will call, and you can call me when ever you need to talk. Ok?" I nodded my head.

"Ok, daddy," I told him. I just thought that maybe they were still going to be together. Kind of like when my friends dad would go on business trips, and later come back.

But this was nothing like that, I soon found out. Mom then told me to get in the car, and we started the drive to Phoenix.

It took us a good twenty three  and a half hours to get to Arizona. It was the longest trip I had ever been on. I never got the chance to say goodbye to any of my friends.

It turns out, my mom had been planning this for quite some time. She just didn't act on it until that day. She brought me to school, and talked to the office that day about our leaving town.

She had already bought a house. This was my next surprise. I knew we had to be there long term for her to have done that. I mean she could have rented a cheap apartment otherwise.

In the beginning, she had seemed so sad. That is, until mom met Phil. Phil is a minor league baseball player. He's not that good, but he gets paid.

Eventually, Phil moved in and mom quit her job. We spent a lot of time traveling, but we never again moved.
