THE FIRST TIME YOU KISSED ME: My heart beat so fast I was scared you would hear it and I didn't know what to do with my hands. You kissed me like I was the answer to every question you'd ever wanted to ask.
THE FIRST TIME YOU SAID "I LOVE YOU": I was not supposed to hear it. You whispered it as you climbed out of bed in the morning and it felt like my body was full of sunshine for the next month.
THE FIRST TIME WE FOUGHT: I cried after you left and you called me three minutes later. You said that you wanted me to know that you loved me, still. And that you were sorry. I'd never known anyone who apologized like that. I am from a family of stubborn grudges.
THE FIRST TIME YOU LEFT: Was also the last. You told me it was too hard, too much, too little. You told me you hadn't loved them, but you hadn't loved me either. I don't remember how exactly it went. You left your favorite pair of earrings on my nightstand, three books on the shelf, a necklace in the bathroom, socks in the laundry, and me.
THE FIRST TIME I SAW YOU AFTER: Our favorite bookstore felt like a sacred place until I saw you between the Russian history section and the Poetry and I wanted to cry. This was supposed to be our safe place but looking at you made me feel hollow. I went home and wrote a poem about heartbreak. I ripped it up and didn't feel better.
