We face difficult decisions everyday, all day. Life is essentially difficult and full of suffering. Otherwise, happiness has no meaning, and ultimately life has no meaning itself.
What would you do when someone who is so important to you suffer? You, too, experienced the helplessness, the despair, that your dear one has to go through. If there is no way for you to intervene, then you solution is simple. You would do everything you can from the sideline to cheer, to support, to encourage your dear one. It is so simple, almost too simple.
What if you can intervene? Shall you take away the suffering of your loved one?
The natural answer is a big YES, because the last thing that we want is watching our loved ones suffering. But, is that the best choice? For suffering itself is the force of growth. By taking away the suffering, do you think we also take away the chance, and the pride to grow of our loved ones? By taking the pain away, don't you deny the strength of your loved ones, deny that they are strong enough?
To live is to suffer. It's a paradox in itself.
