The key card in Maya's hand flashed in front of a lock beside a metal door with a flick of her wrist, soon followed by a green light granting us access. My eyes followed her tuck the card back into the pocket of her cardigan before her hands pushed the door open. She glanced over her shoulder, smiling. As the door opened, I followed her inside of her home, taking everything in that I possibly could.
"Wow, this is really nice," I complimented her, lowly whistling.
The door opened up to the main room of their home with a dusty orange couch positioned in front of the opposite wall. A small light illuminated the dim room from a square table near what appeared to be a man-made sink, along with several others around the room, both hanging from the ceiling and on top of tables. A shelf lined the far wall with various small objects on each shelf.
Maya let me step further into the room while she stepped off to the side, softly shutting the door behind us. "My dad's working right now, so it's just the two of us right now," she stated and walking to the left of me. She gestured toward the side with her hand. "My room's over here."
"Oh, right. Lead the way." I waved my hand in her direction.
The walk to her bedroom only took a few steps and then we stepped into another room, only this one was smaller. A single twin bed laid against the wall near the door with a colorful blue blanket over the top of it. A few paintings covered the walls a darker style to all of them.
Maya walked over to a wooden dresser, opening the fourth drawer. "I think we're about the same size, so I think I have some things that will fit you."
I walked over to her dresser, intrigued by the stack of books piled on top of it. "Thank you for this, by the way. I really appreciate it."
She pulled a few pairs of jeans out of the drawer and handed them over to me. "It's really no problem. I don't wear any of this anymore."
I carried the jeans over to her bed, examining each pair to see if they would fit. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure," she responded, tossing a few shirts on the bed beside the jeans. She rebalanced herself on her feet in the crouched position she found herself in and peered up at me while simultaneously searching through her clothes.
"What's going on with you and my brother?" I absentmindedly looked at the clothes.
My question stunned Maya. She froze in place, a dark blue shirt fell from her fingers and her cheeks burned warm. A smirk tugged at my lips at her silent response.
"Uh...Nothing. He doesn't see--"
I laughed. "Okay, I won't force you to answer that." I picked up the shirt she dropped and held it up to my body. "And if you were about to say that Jasper doesn't see you that way, let me reassure you that he definitely does. I can tell by the way he looks at you."
Her cheeks turned redder with every word I said. She hid her face with her dark hair, distracting herself with the clothes. "What-- What do you mean?" Maya shyly peeked at me over her shoulder. A frown slipped onto her lips. "How does he look at me?"
I sat down on the edge of the bed, fiddling with a pair of light washed jeans that I thought would fit me best. "He just looks at you like he'd do anything for you if you ever asked. I know my brother pretty well, even if I haven't known him my whole life--"
"You haven't?" Maya frowned.
My head snapped up at her question, suddenly remembering she had no idea about our past. She only knew that we came from the sky and nothing else. "Uh, no. Um, when we were up in space, our people had this rule that there could only be one child per family and if you broke that rule, the child would be locked until they turned eighteen. Once they turned eighteen, they would be floated."
