"Hey, uh, can we talk?"
Jasper's voice behind me took me by surprise and my right hand tightened around the handle of the scalpel, completely shielding the shiny weapon from my brother's sight. With my back to him, I slyly slid the medical tool into the pocket of my gray, zip-up hoodie, deep enough inside so it wouldn't potentially fall out at any given point or be seen.
"Yeah, what's up?" I asked him and spun around to face him, casually zipping the jacket halfway up.
Everything needed to be secured on my body before I began my plan to escape Mount Weather. If only I could get my hands on a backpack or something, but the bag would only draw attention to myself from the others and I couldn't risk something like that. In order for the plan to work, no one could suspect anything, otherwise Dante would stop me and I'd never be able to go after Bellamy.
My eyes landed on my brother's awkward stance at the foot of the bunk beds, accidentally blocking me between the two beds and the wall, scratching the back of his neck.
"Um..." He refused to meet my gaze, dark eyes darted from side to side until they landed on the floor by his sneakers.
His sudden lack of ability to speak sent a wave of fear through my body, paranoid he somehow learned the truth and came to talk me out of it. My heart pounded in my ears until the chatter in the room was drowned out. My hands unknowingly clenched down by my sides, growing clammy with every passing second of silence between us. Miller and Harper were sworn to secrecy. They knew how important this escape was to not only us, but for the rest of our people. I had to do this. I had to find everyone that didn't make it here to Mount Weather with us.
Jasper nervously glanced over his shoulder at our fellow people in the large room before he stepped closer. "How do I, uh--" He dropped his voice to a low whisper. "How do I talk to Maya?"
The breath I held slowly released through my parted lips at his innocent question. His awkwardness wasn't due to finding out I planned to escape Mount Weather tonight, but because he had a crush on Maya. He never suspected anything.
"You already talk to her," I reminded him with a knowing grin, feeling myself grow calm.
"No. No, I know," he said and shook his head. "I just, uh-- I really like her and I don't, uh..." Jasper trailed off while his cheeks blazed bright red. His eyes peeked down at me through his eyelashes before he added, "I don't know how to talk to her."
"Aw, Jazz," I quietly gushed over his nervousness about the entire situation. I stepped closer to him and gently patted his shoulder. "You don't have to stress about it. Just be yourself. She already likes you for who you are."
"But, I don't know how," Jasper stressed to me, frowning. "I- I mean, every time I try to say something to her, I either trip over my words or just forget how to speak. It's like she has some kind of spell on me."
My hand returned to his shoulder and softly squeezed it. "I promise you, it's not a spell. You just like her and it's completely normal when you have a crush on someone."
"Did you ever feel this way about Bellamy?" The question flew off of my brother's lips before he could fully think them through and his eyes widened once he realized his mistake. "Shit! I didn't mean to bring him up. I'm sorry--"
"No, it's okay," I interjected with a look of surprise written on my facial features.
I paused for a few seconds to take in his question and willed myself not to get upset at the thought of Bellamy not being here with all of us like he should be. That's why I had to escape this place. Nothing would stop me from finding him-- from finding everyone.
