poem no.4: i will rise:

You may twist the words of the story,
To gain pride and sympathy for yourself.
You may drag my name through the mud,
But still,
Like a flower well planted,
I Will Rise.
Does my attitude anger you?
Are you content with that rage?
Because I walk with an unbending pride,
And contentment with myself.
Just as the moon does in the night,
Lighting the path for others,
I Will Rise.
Just as the sun does at dawn,
Where everything is at it's darkest,
I Will Rise.
Were you hoping to see me cry?
Red face and swollen eyes?
Tears falling like rain upon my fair skin,
A once beautiful soul weakened by your words?
Does my happiness shock you?
Do you cry in my place
Because I'm still shining,
Just as bright as the moon and all it's stars?
You may try and cut me down with your sharp words like knives,
You can glare daggers at me with your eyes,
You may try and kill me with the poisonous words you speak,
But
I Will Rise,
Stronger than before.
Does my confidence leave you speechless?
Does it come as a shock to you
When I walk down the streets,
Head held high and smile on my face?
Despite the oppression of women like me,
Before me,
I Will Rise.
Into a beautiful future,
That's equal for all,
I Will Rise.
I leave behind a past of hurt,
Anger,
Sadness,
And depression.
And I Will Rise
Like the tide.
Try to break my spirit,
If you must.
In the end,
It will have been for not.
Because like the fire burning in my soul,

[PSA: this is a poem I wrote for my English class that was based on Maya Angelou's poem. We were supposed to write the same poem in different words with a similar meaning. But I, by no means, am trying to copy her work]
