CHRIS'S POV

"Oh- my, um, Hayes I just - um I -" I started to say, but then stopped and looked around. Christina was standing at the edge of the pool her eyes wide, and it looked like she was ready to kill me. I looked back at Hayes, and he was just as shocked as me. I didnt know what to say. I didn't know how to feel. I looked around one more time, then at Hayes. I just left. I walked out of the pool, and out of the fence. Cora was out with friends, my 16 year old sister, Lola was out with her boyfriend, my 18 year old sister Beca, was at college, and all my friends were at the party.

I went around, and sat on the steps of Hayes house. What am I going to do? I just kissed my best friend. This could ruin everything. What if Hayes didn't like it? What if he doesn't want to be my friend? I liked it. I definitely for sure liked it. I felt all these weird sparks and butterflies, and all kinds of different feelings. I put my head in my hands, and thought. Well now everything is going to be awkward as shit, great.

I heard the fence open, and then close. I didn't bother to look, because I didn't care. "Chris?" Someone asked. I immediately knew it was Hayes. He sat down next to me, and I just couldn't make eye contact with him. What would I feel? I felt his blue eyes burning holes into me, and I couldn't look at him.

"Chris," he began. He always does this. Or not always, he has been doing this. Whenever I'm sad, or confused he always begins by saying my name.

"Hayes this is my fault. I responded to my name. They probably meant Christina, not me" I say not even looking at him.

"I know. I thought Christina was in the water, and I even told them to stop calling her Chris so there weren't be any confusion" he said scooting closer to me.

"Well I'm sorry that I responded to my name, I should've known It was Christina. I'm sorry she's mad at you, I'm sorry you kissed me instead of her" I said, playing with my fingers. I couldn't look at him, Id probably cry.

"I'm glad I kissed you instead of her" he said quietly. My eyes went wide. What did he just say?!

I'm glad I kissed you instead of her.

I'm glad I kissed you instead of her.

Those thought ran through my mind. I collected my courage, and looked at him. "What?" I ask surprised, and confused.

"You kissed back, Chris. Don't tell me you didn't because when I kissed you, I immediately felt someone kiss back" he says smirking. I punched his shoulder, my cheeks firing up, and turning cherry red. I kept my gaze on the road, while he was staring at me with his blue eyes.

"After I kissed back, you kissed back too" I say looking at him, my eyebrows raised, a smirk plastered on my face. He chuckles lightly, and then looks at the road. Does he like me? Because he isn't saying anything...I need to ask him. For the sake of our friendship.

"Do you like me?" I ask looking at him, but he was looking straight at the road.

"D-Define like" he stutters before looking at me. My eyes went wide. He likes me? Hayes likes me? My best friend?

"Hayes were friends. That kiss it-it was nothing. No matter how much we think that kiss meant something, it didn't. Were friends. Only friends. Just friends. Best Friends. Nothing more, nothing less," I say getting up.

"But Chris -" he started to say but I cut him off. I didn't want to talk about this anymore. I don't want to get into an argument.

"Hayes let's just get back to the party" I say and he nods and stands up. We head to the backyard in complete silence. I hope I didn't screw anything up.

Christina comes over. "You" she said pointing a finger at me. She came stomping over to me.

"You kissed my boyfriend, you-you slut!" She shouted at me. Hayes stepped in between us.

"Don't call my best friend a slut" he said, and Christina's eyes widened. So did mine. That was so..sweet.

"Christina just stop okay? No one wants to talk to the immature bitch, so do us all a favor and just stop" Hayes said brushing past her, pulling me by the hand. She gives me a dirty look. I can tell I'm blushing like crazy. Hayes continues to pull me further into the crowd of people. "I'll be right back. Stay here" he says before running off. I start smiling widely, and uncontrollably.

Steph and Becky came scurrying over. "Oh. My. God.!" Becky said laughing, and clapping her hands.

"You have to tell us everything! Sleepover at my place tonight?! I'll invite Rachael and Jen!" She says whipping out her phone. I looked around the yard, and it seems like everyone forgot about the past events of Hayes and I. Some people were playing water basketball, some were playing on the pool floaties, a lot were talking by the pool, and eating. I started to walk towards the pool, to dip my feet in, but I was pushed, and I went flying towards the basketball hoop. I know I hit it hard, but everything after that went black.

HAYES POV

I went inside to get more sodas, but about when I was rummaging for the soda cans, I heard screaming. Not like fun screams, like frightening screams. I run outside, and scan the backyard. Everyone's gathered by the pool, and I don't see many people in the pool. I shove through the crowd, where Steph and Becky are trying to lift someone out of the pool, who looked unconscious.

Chris.
