a little background information about misophonia, notes about the main character notes about the author.
misophonia [selective sound sensitivity] is a neurological disorder in which the brain processes certain sounds [most commonly chewing, breathing, tapping, sniffling, coughing] in a negative fashion, causing intense emotional flares of anger, disgust, frustration, violence, stress, or anxiety. for some people a reaction, which can be as simple as muttering under your breath or as extreme as harming the person making the sound, is necessary to get over the emotional flare. a fight or flight kind of thing. it can be terrifying for a normally nonviolent people when all of a sudden they want to turn around and whip their hand across the face of the kids sitting behind them in class just because they're chewing a piece of gum. being afraid you're going to hurt someone is not fun. it can also be hard to cope with the flares and learn to react in safe and effective ways.
if someone is diagnosed with misophonia they have a higher chance of also being diagnosed with things such as o.c.d., depression, anxiety, and tinnitus.
i was diagnosed with misophonia earlier in the year, but i have been struggling with the condition for years. recently i started therapy and my therapist suggested i write about my disorder, so here it is. i figured if i have to write something, why not make it fun? none of the characters are based off of real people, except for the boys of course.
cassidy has misophonia, but also suffers from some hyperacusis like symptoms [all sounds sound louder and more excruicating than they really are. that's just a quick definition, i don't have hyperacusis but like cassidy, i suffer from similar symptoms.]. she's a fictional character, but at times she shares some experiences i have gone through [not meeting michael clifford of course :P ]. through this story and it's characters i'm hoping to just share what it's like living with a rather unknown disorder.
feel free to message me anytime to talk about the story or the condition, or anything really. i'm always there if you need someone to listen about something going in your life.
my cover is really bad, i know. sorry.
