As I finally am able to swim to the side, I hear my mother calling my name. I love hearing her calm, soothing voice. It reminds me of my father's voice. He left when I was 3. My mother never told me why he left but I know that it had something to do with water. That's why my mother and I are afraid of water.

"Mallory! I told you NEVER to go in water! NEVER!"

This voice on the other hand, not so soothing...

"Mom, I know I know, but please just help me get out!" As my mother is pulling me out of the light blue water my tail breaks back into 2 legs.

"We need to go home! Now Mallory!"

In the car, we are silent. As I look out the window, I think about my father. Why did he leave? Was he like me? Did he grow a tail? When did he find out? Did he love me? I think about this until we pull into our drive way.

"Mom, I truly didn't know....about the tail".

"Mallory, what do you think you are?"

"Well, I thought I was a regular, ordinary girl. But I guess I was wrong".

"Mallory, you are never to go back into water again. EVER". I go and lay in my bed and think about what happened. I'm in my room for over 2 hours.

Wait... if I'm a mermaid then my mother is probably too!

"Mom! Mom! I need to ask you some..."

When I look in the living room my babysitter, Ann, is eating OUR food and watching tv on MY beanbag.

"Well hello, darlin'. Your mommy left to go get them groceries. She told me to tell ya to stay outta water for some odd reason... " She eats a chip then continues talking. Gross, " but darlin', I wouldn't tell on you if u showered".

Ugh, off course. Ann always babysits me and she talks to me like I'm a child. I'm 13 you know! But I bet she's like 1000 or something like that, so I deal with her. I go back into my room and change out of my school clothes into a teal and yellow sun dress. The sunset is making the green walls in my room orangey yellow. I hear Ann snoring from the living room. It's my time to figure out what I really am.
