THE NEXT MORNING, I awoke to the sunlight filtering through the dusty windows of the tower. My back ached, and I rolled over, coming face to face with a rat.

"Oh!" I jumped up, and the rat scurried away to the rock in the corner.

The three Baudelaires stirred, Violet on the floor next to me, and Klaus and Sunny on the bed.

Violet's eyes opened, her blue orbs scanning deep with knowledge and sorrow. Her gaze landed on me. "Lily, are you alright?"

"Oh yeah. Sorry I woke you up."

"Don't worry about it." Violet sat up, fully awake now.

We sat in silence for a moment, looking upon the sleeping figures of the two younger Baudelaires. I watched Sunny's chest rise and fall with each breath.

Violet scooted closer to me and kept her voice at a whisper to not wake up her siblings. "So you and Klaus..."

Discomfort raced through my veins. I fixated my eyes on a point on the ceiling, afraid that if I met Violet's eyes I would spontaneously combust.

She placed a hand on my shoulder and said, "It's alright, Lily. I'm really happy for you two."

Relieved, I let out a breath and forced myself to meet her eyes. No words came to me, so I gave her a weak smile. She returned it happily.

"I'd prefer if we could talk about something else," I said, my eyes darting to Klaus' sleeping figure.

She nodded. "So have you read any good books lately?"

"Oh yes!" My eyes lit up. "Just last week I read a book about the mechanics of cars! It was fascinating! I'm sure you'd love it!"

She reciprocated my excitement. "Really? That sounds very insightful! Maybe Justice Strauss' library has a copy."

"We can check once Klaus and Sunny wake up."

She beamed at me, and I basked in the warmth.  It felt like being at home again- discussing books with Violet. Even though this place was far from pleasant, we had each other, and maybe that could be enough.

"Good morning orphans!" shouted Olaf as he slammed the door open.

Well, there goes that idea, I thought.

Klaus and Sunny's eyes shot open, searching the room wildly. Their eyes landed on the figure in the doorway, and they sat up with audible groans and sighs.

"Good morning," replied Violet half-heartedly.

"I have a wonderful idea for you children." He stroked his goatee, occasionally picking out random odds and ends that had got stuck there. "I have written you parts in my new play!"

He made the announcement in such a grandeur fashion, then stared expectantly at us.

We stared back.
