"Shuck it, there's nothin' in these maps that'll help us get out of this shuckin' place! No clues, no shapes, nothing! Let's just face it already, stop lying to ourselves, we're never goin' to get out of here!" I yell, slamming my fists on the table that has maps of every section of that damn maze, even the twists and turns contained in them, laid out over the surface.
The boys all turn to me, surprised at my outburst, they just stare, nobody knowing how to react. At least, not until Newt stood and started walking over to me. He placed his hand on my shoulder and tilted his head down to look me in the eyes.
"Hey, look at me," he says, and I look up to meet his eyes, "We will get out of here, there's something in these maps that'll tell us what to do, we just have to look a lil' harder. Just clear your mind and calm down, we all need to think rationally if wer're going to find the way out of here." I nod at Newt, then turn back to the tables, my mind now calmed and ready to start working again.
The sun is right above our heads in the sky, marking the time to be about midday, and we have still found a total of nothing. looking down at the maps for the millionth time today, I notice something for the first time, some of the lines conect perfectly. I quickly grab the other papers, piecing them together like a puzzle. Slowly but surely, a shape starts to form, letters. The newly found letters become words as I complete the puzzle. When I've finished, i call the boys over to look. Together, we study it silently, trying to make a meaning from those six words.
Float
Catch
Bleed
Death
Stiff
Push
Confusion radiates off of alll of us as we stand there, gathered around the small table, silence hanging around us like a sheet. Suddenly Thomas gasps, spinning around to look Minho in the eyes, a look or revelation plastered on his face.
"The griever hole!" he gasps out.
Thomas must have noticed the rest of our confusion, none of us having every been in the maze, and quickly started explaining to us.
"When Minho, Alby," Newt flinches at the mention of his dead friend, cusing Thomas to give him an apologetic look before continuing. "and I were stuck in the maz that night, two grievers started chasing us, and we found a cliff that we foudn out is where they spam]wm out of. It's basically a big hole, or at least, we think it is."
After Thomas finishes his explination, we all agree to check it out, as it's our last choice for survival, other than staying here in the glade, and risking an even bigger chance of dying. Overall, most people have decided to take the risk and come into the maze with the keepers and I, other than Gally, who told me that, against my advice and begging, he would rather stay. The rest will stay in the maze, with Gally as their leader.
Those of us leaving are now quickly shoving necessities into our bags- food, a change of clothes, and our waters- so that we can leave the Glade before the sun goes down. Within what seems like about five mintes, everyone is finished packing and good to go. In total, we have a group of 116 going in, including Thomas, Newt, Minho, and I, who are standing at the front near the maze doors. The gladers are all muttering amongst themselves, some seemingly having second thoughts on whether they made the right choice or not.
"Alright everyone, slim it!" I yell out, quickly silencing everyone in the group, "We're goin' in there to find a way out, and if we do, we're not comin' back in. Yes, we may also kick the can from griever attacks, nto goin' to like to ya. This is your last chance to decide to stay, if you're on the fence, but it's gonna have to be quick, the lot of us are goin' in in twenty seconds."
Newt smiles at me proudly, a look that I already know will always give me butterflies. In the end, about six boys walk away, having made their final descision to stay with Gally's group, leaving us with 110 people going in to find the way out through the griever hole. I turn and look through the maze door, a small wave of nervousness going over me, yet still never having second thoughts of what I'm about to do.
I turn around to the croud of boys behind us and nod, feeling a hand that I recognize to be Newts slipping into mine. I look up at his face studing him, before kissing his cheek and running into the maze, pulling him behind me, with over a hundred cheering boys behind us, excited for what may be their chance to get out of this hell-hole.
