Within a few minutes, we've all gone own the slide into a room full of observation windows and metal walls. After a quick check-over, I decide the room is empty of people. Well, live people at least. I turn toward Newt, trying to keep a stoic and calm face to not worry the rest of the boys. However, he quickly sees past my attempt to appear calm, and pulls me into a hug.
"It's fine, whatever did it's gotta be gone by now, love." He whispers into my ear. I nod, trying to convince myself that the boy whose arms I'm held in is right, but something still feels off.
My worries are confirmed when I hear a click come from behind me. Newts arms fall from around me, as I whip around to see what caused the noise. I feel my heart fall into my stomach as I take in the sight of Gally, his face scrunched up, attempting to stop tears falling down his cheeks, and pointing a machine of sorts at Thomas. The later boys face pales, as if he knows what the machine is, and I realize that he most likely does, being the only Glader with any recollection of the outside world. No doubts are left in my mind that this is a dangerous situation, and I try to convince him to drop the weapon.
"Gally, please drop it, I don't know why you're doing this, but we can work it out." I suggest, my efforts to keep my voice steady failing. He just shakes his head and grips the thing tighter.
"You can't leave," He says, his voice as shaky as mine. Thomas interrupts him, trying to reason with the boy.
"We did Gally, we're out, we're free. We're not in the maze anymore." He reasons, but his words do nothing to stop Gally, who shakes his head, unconvinced.
"Free?" He asks snidely, "You think we're free out there? No. No, there's no escape from this place." Gally now has tears running freely down his face, as he raises the weapon to Thomas's chest. My mind goes into overdrive, trying to think of something, anything to stop Gally from firing it.
"Gally? Listen to me," I say gently. "You're not thinkin' straight, Gal. We can help you, but only if you put down the weapon." My friend just shakes his head, chuckling dryly.
"I belong to the maze," My eyes widen as I realize what Gally's leading to, and I start running to Thomas, who's across the room now. "We all do, Char."
I quicken my pace, only a couple feet away from Thomas, when I hear Chuck yell out for Gally to stop. The younger boys voice catches my attention as well, causing me to look over to where he is, stating directly in front of his best friend. Almost immediately after I stop running, a loud explosion rings through the room, followed by the thud of a spear into flesh. I look over towards my former Keeper, only to see him falling to his knees, spear sticking from his stomach. My head turns away from the sight, in an attempt to spare me the sight, only to Chuck on the ground as well. The curly haired boy had a red stain of blood on his shirt as he looked up at Thomas. The older boy was muttering curses under his breath while he tried to stop the blood from coming out of the youngest boys chest, but I knew he couldn't be saved. Chuck puts his hand on Thomas's shoulder, handing him a small figuring, and lets out a strangled breath as he starts to speak, despite his friends efforts to stop him.
"Take it to them," he wheezes out, "take it, and find them."
Tears fall from my eyes as I see the boy that I'd grown so fond of, take a last labored breath, before his body goes limp. A scream tears through my lips as I realize that both of the boys I'd seen as my brother are gone. They're never coming back. I thrash around as somebody wraps their arms around me, pulling my into their chest, but calm as I recognize the person to be Newt. I tightly grip onto him, and he strokes my hair as I cry into his shoulder. The moment it cut short as the metal doors behind our group are kicked open, and a dozen men in protective gear run in, ushering people out. One of the men tries to grab my arm, but is stopped by Newt, who shoves the arm off me, yelling for him to stay away.
The ginger boy gently put his arm around my waist, and together, we run after the rest of the Gladers, or rather, my newly freed friends, out of the building and away from the maze that contained us for as long as any of us remember.
