Epilogue
"Daisy!"
Me and Atticus were sitting on the couch. Atticus was feeding our four month old baby, Sean.
"Coming!"
Daisy, our six year old daughter, came running into the room, her blonde curls bouncing against her navy blue dress.
She looked at me with her brown and gray eyes, smiling. Her brown freckles covered her face, and I couldn't help but think how cute she was.
I lifted her into my lap.
"Honey, we have visitors coming. Is your room clean?"
She nodded, and I looked at Atticus.
"So if I go in there, there will be no toys in the floor or on your bed? Everything will be where it belongs?"
"Let me go check." She said, and ran off to her room.
"Miles, I know you didn't like your surrogate, but she made a hell of a cute baby."
"I know. But I could say the same for you!"
"I guess so."
"She has your eyes."
"You act like I don't know!"
I smiled at Atticus, and then checked the time.
"Caroline and Katelyn are supposed to be here in half an hour."
"Go make sure Daisy has her room clean, will you?"
I stood up and walked down the hall, stopping at Daisy's door. I opened it, and sure enough she was sitting on her unmade bed, playing with her dolls. There were toys all over the floor.
"Daisy, didn't we ask you to clean up?"
"Yeah."
"And did you do it?"
"Aunt Care doesn't care!"
"I want your room to look nice for your aunt, okay?"
"Okaayyy."
She slipped off the bed and started cleaning, and I watched her until she was done, helping her make her bed.
"There. See? I told you it would be fine."
I went back in the living room, and Atticus wasn't there.
"Babe? Where are you?"
I went in our room to see him placing baby Sean in the crib.
"Hey."
We sat on the bed. I pulled him to me, kissing him.
"Daddy?" I heard Daisy say from the door.
Atticus pulled away. "Yes, dear?"
"Can I see your robot leg again?"
"Which one of us?" I said, smiling.
"Both!"
I pulled up the leg of my jeans, and Atticus did the same.
"Couldn't you just give the robot ones to one of you and the other have the real ones?"
"Well, no. You can't really do that very easy."
"Okay."
She skipped back into the living room, and I looked down at Atticus's prosthetic.
"You remember when you didn't have that?"
"God, it sucked. It's so good to be able to walk again."
There was a knock at the door, and both of us stood. Our prosthetics clicked at the same time, and I laughed. That was a mistake, because after the clicking and the laughing, came the crying.
I picked up Sean, my birth son, and cradled him to my chest. As I tried to soothe him, me and Atticus went to the door. Atticus opened it, and Caroline and Katelyn came in.
"Hey, guys." Caroline said, and Katelyn smiled. She picked up Sean, and the crying stopped. I watched him grab for her long purple hair, and then I heard Daisy sprinting down the hallway.
"Aunt Care!"
She jumped into Carolines arms, and Caroline swung her around before setting her down again.
"Hi sweetie! Look, Aunt Katie is here too!"
Daisy hugged Katelyn with a smile, and I couldn't help smiling at her sweetness.
"Let me talk to your daddies, please. Then I'll come play with you."
Daisy nodded and ran back to her room, and we all sat down.
"So, what's new?" I asked them.
"Well, we actually have to tell you something." They said, and looked at each other.
"What?"
"We're... kind of... dating."
"Aw, congrats!" I said, smiling.
"I just realised something." Atticus said, pushing his new glasses up to his eyes.
"Yes?"
"Do our kids have any straight family?"
"Their grandparents!"
"At least we never have to deal with the 'I'm gay.' thing. If she is, it won't be hard to tell us."
"Yeah, true."
Just then, there was a knock at the door, and when I opened it, there stood my father-in-law, James McDaniel.
"Hi Miles! Where Atticus?"
Atticus jumped up and ran to hug his dad, and I couldn't help but smiling.
"I wanted to see my babies." He said.
"I'll get Daisy, and Sean's right here."
Katelyn handed Sean to James, and he laughed.
"While it's great to see these guys, I was talking about you and Miles."
Atticus laughed.
"Aw, thanks Dad."
We all sat down, and Daisy came in and sat on Caroline's lap.
I looked at Katelyn, and I could tell something was on her mind.
"What is it, Katie?" I asked
"Well, I was wondering if I could ask Atticus something." She replied.
"Shoot." He said, and I took his hand.
"Well, I'm writing a book, and I was wondering if I could base it off of you. You know, like a non-fiction."
"Wow, I would be honored!"
"But I need you to tell me, well, your whole story."
I looked at Atticus, and he smiled.
"It's a rocky road, but okay."
"Go on." I said, squeezing his hand. He smiled at me, and took a deep breath before starting.
"'What?' I said, looking at her."
Atticus looked at me, and I nodded
"I looked away, blushing, neither one of us wanting to answer the question I had just asked..."
