"You, too..." InuYasha replied politely yet quietly, being prohibited to staying in the hallway a second longer. Ushering the young man inside, Mrs. Higurashi informed that dinner would be ready any minute.
As he was eating the delicious meal Kagome's mother had prepared, in silence, Mrs. Higurashi's eyes were fixed on the young man sitting before her. "Tell me, haven't I seen you somewhere before?" she asked, thinking back to when they had first arrived in this small town. "I dunno," lied InuYasha, but it didn't take long before both Kagome and Souta remembered as well. "You were that boy we saw that day! We drove past you, r'member?" Souta informed, leaving InuYasha with surprised look on his face. He'd almost completely forgotten about that day. Back then, he remembered he had thought of Kagome as simply being a Kikyou look-alike, but it only now occurred to him how wrong he'd been.
InuYasha's P.O.V.
Kagome is nothing like Kikyou. They look almost identical, and yet, they're so different. I guess it's no real surprise. After all, they're two completely different people. I laughed quietly to myself. Since when did I become a ladies' man? Ever since I started going to school, I was always a target for bullies and I eventually became hostile towards everyone. Even to those who tried to be nice to me. Like Kagome...
My thoughts were interrupted by my phone vibrating in my pocket. Pulling it out and looking at the number on the display, I froze. Crap... Kikyou was calling... What the hell did she want from me now?! Rising from my chair, I glanced down at the half-empty plate before my eyes as a wave of anger swept over me. I excused myself from the table and rushed into the hallway to answer the phone.
Narrator's P.O.V.
Sprinting into the hallway, InuYasha brought his phone up to his ear as Kikyou's voice came leaking out, sounding angrier than InuYasha had ever heard it before, "InuYasha!" He had to keep his phone a great distance from his ears as not to hurt them. "You don't hafta yell! Whaddya want, Kikyou?"
"Why are you not at home?" InuYasha couldn't believe what he was hearing. Is Kikyou jealous? SHE'S the one who broke up with ME! Is this about Kagome? "None of Your business! Listen, Kikyou! Maybe you don't remember, but our relationship ended months ago! And YOU were the one who ended it for no reason at all!" In the end, Kikyou was the one who ended the call, after several insults towards InuYasha.
After his little conversation with Kikyou was over, InuYasha put his phone back in his pocket and returned to the kitchen. Little did he know that Kagome and the rest of her family had heard the entire conversation. All Kagome could do, was stare at her boyfriend in utter shock. She was beyond herself, barely able to speak. But it was neither anger nor jealousy towards Kikyou. It was fear. Fear that her first serious relationship would be sabotaged by her boyfriend's jealous ex-girlfriend. Thinking back to her first day in her new school, Kagome realized that she was a threat to Kikyou.
"Where's Kikyou...?" Kagome's voice was but a whisper, yet it was enough to make InuYasha's ears flicker as a wave of guilt swept over him the instant he grasped her words. "I think she's waiting for me at my house for whatever reason," InuYasha explained, his gaze even avoiding Kagome's at this point. "I'm so sorry, but I have to go... I-I have to talk to her...About us...And about the past. I'm sorry, Kagome..."
"I understand, InuYasha. It's okay," lied Kagome and a smile appeared on InuYasha's face as he embraced her. InuYasha's lips softly brushed against Kagome's before pulling away and leaving through the front door.
