Imagine dating Elijah but feeling like he's embarrassed of you.

Based on Superficial Love by Ruth B.

"Are you nervous?" Elijah asked as you flitted through the wide assortment of dresses at the shop your boyfriend had taken you to.

"No." You replied with a shrug. "This is just gonna be like all the other dinners, right? Look pretty, smile, crack a few jokes nothing new."

"Well the whole family will be there today." He elaborated. "Not just Rebekah and Kol. So, I would really appreciate it if you put in extra effort today."

"Wow, extra effort?" You asked with an unamused chuckle. "Sorry I'm not fancy like you Elijah."

"That's not what I meant, Y/N." Elijah replied with a sigh.

"I know. I guess I am a little nervous." You told him but you knew that you weren't. Elijah was.

"Don't be nervous." Elijah told you with a warm smile as his eyes wandered over to a fancy blue sundress. "What about this dress?"

"It's okay." You answered with a shrug, but your eyes were locked on a short red dress that was completely up your alley. "I like this one a lot better."

"Y/N..."

"Don't worry, Elijah." You said as you picked the dress up and kissed him. "I'll get them both."

"I adore you." He murmured as he pressed another kiss to your lips.

"I love you too." You replied with a warm beam. "Now let's go get the dresses and I'll see you at 7."

You did exactly that and you were now getting ready with your best friends Kol and Rebekah as you waited in anticipation to meet the rest of the Mikaelson family. You had met Kol and Rebekah at a club and were ever grateful for the experience as it led you to meeting the man you knew was the love of your life—Elijah.

"So, are you nervous about meeting Klaus and Freya?" Rebekah asked you.

"I know I should be, but I'm really not." You told her as Kol braided your hair in front of the mirror. "Just smile and wave."

"Doesn't that get annoying?" Kol asked you.

"I mean a little, but I don't mind if it helps Elijah." You replied with a shrug. "Why are you asking?

"Just curious." Kol said as he finished and you examined yourself in the mirror. "Why anyone would want to tame you, I don't know."

You looked into the mirror and suddenly felt sad as you saw someone that wasn't you. You didn't wear afternoon tea dresses and you certainly didn't tie your hair up in fancy plaits.

"Do you guys think Elijah is embarrassed of me?"

"No."

"Yes."

The two answered in unison and you looked as Rebekah turned to her brother, completely appalled. Kol simply shrugged.

"Elijah is not embarrassed of you." Rebekah told you but Kol only scoffed.

"You can lie to her all you want, but we both know the truth." Kol replied. "But Elijah is Elijah and Y/N is Y/N. One is an uptight patriarch and the other is a fun bubbly young woman. Elijah wasn't made for partying and Y/N wasn't made for high tea."

"In other words, I'm a trophy." You murmured unhappily.

"I didn't say that." Kol assured you. "Elijah does love you. I just think he's nervous about how who you are reflects on him."
