You and Stefan had been friends for a long time and your feelings for him were clear. So, clear that Stefan had asked you out. And had Stefan been any other guy, you would've said yes in a heartbeat. But he wasn't. He was Elena Gilbert's epic love. Those two were always on and off and therefore you weren't about to get your heartbroken for no reason. So, your feelings for Stefan went unsaid.

"So, you're sure you don't have any feelings for Stefan?" Elena asked as the two of you sat at the grill.

"Definitely." You told her. "Sure, he's cute, sexy and nice, but I don't want to be his girlfriend, no."

"Sounds exactly like you want to be his girlfriend." Elena said with a chuckle.

"I don't." I corrected. "Why do you care anyway? Are the Stelena feels creeping back up again?"

"I just want you to admit that Stefan makes you happy." Elena said as she squeezed your hands.

"What are we talking about?" Bonnie said as she sat beside her in the booth.

"Y/N's inability to admit her feelings for Stefan." Elena explained.

"She's always been like that." Your long-time friend told Elena. "Seriously! I've never met anyone so afraid of heartbreak."

"I'm not afraid of heartbreak." You insisted. "I just don't like Stefan in that way."

"Of course." Elena said with a roll of her eyes.

Stefan walked into the grill and in spite of yourself, you began to stupidly smile and tucked a strand of your hair behind your ears, casting your gaze down to the table.

"I don't even need to look up to know that Stefan just walked in." Elena said with a smirk as the blonde vampire sat beside you.

"What time do you call this Mr Salvatore?" You asked with a coy smile.

"Late o'clock?" He said with a chuckle.

"Wow, you've been on the earth for over a hundred years and that's the best you can do?" You asked with a laugh.

"Yeah well that would've killed in my day."

"Slaughtered more than the black plague."

Your favourite song began to play and you started to tap your foot to the music absentmindedly, sending a devilish twinkle into the eyes of your close friends. One that you struck against pre-emptively.

"Come dance with me." You said as you got to your feet and pulled him up to his feet.

Bonnie and Elena began to giggle but you chose to ignore them and instead focus on the closeness of you and Stefan. You held your body close to his as you swayed to the beat, only to make the mistake of looking into his eyes. He looked down at yours and used his thumb to brush against your face.

"You look beautiful." He murmured.

"I always do." You said with a small chuckle.

"What are we doing, Y/N?" He asked me with a sigh. "I love you."

"Again with that L word." You said, taking in a deep breath. "Stefan..."

"Are you telling me that you don't feel the same way?" He asked and as you looked into his perfect eyes, you wanted the right words to come out.

"I have to go." They did not.

You went home and sat down on your bed, staring up at the ceiling as you cursed yourself for not being able to tell the perfect man about how you felt. Your phone began to buzz and you looked to see a text from Elena.

Elena: Hey, can we talk?

You: Not really in a talk mood.

Elena: Please, it's important.

You: Fine

Elena: Meet me at the Salvatores

You got to your feet and reluctantly made your way to the Salvatore Boarding House, hoping you wouldn't run into Stefan. You knocked on the door, but there was no answer. It was unlocked so you went in, where there was still no sign of anyone.

"Hello?" You called out to seemingly no one. You walked into the living room where Elena and Stefan were sat, their lips about to touch. "Oh. I—uh—I'll just um—I gotta go."

You rushed out of the house, ignoring Stefan calling out to you, proud that you had trusted your instincts. He was always going to be stuck on Elena. You knew he was running after you, so you quickened your pace, but at his speed, he blocked your way.

"Y/N, wait." Stefan insisted.

"For what?" You asked in anger. "For you to tell me that you love me again?"

"Y/N—"

"Was this to punish me?" You continued. "You were mad because I didn't say I love you back? Well now you know why! Because you want to be with Elena, deep down inside of you and I don't want to tell you how I feel because I didn't want you to hurt me! But I guess I didn't have to say it out loud to get hurt. So have fun with Elena or whatever."

Stefan pulled you into his arms and gave you the kiss he had wanted to give you for so long and against all signals going off in your head, you kissed him back, just as vigorously. Your fingers ran through his hair and lightly tugged before pulling away.

"Say it." Stefan told you. "Say that you love me."

"But Elena—"

"Knew that the only way to get you to admit your feelings was to drive you to the edge." Stefan explained, causing you to gasp in shock. "Now, say it."

You pulled him in for another kiss, this one more heartfelt than the first.

"I love you."
