Imagine being a dancer in love with Klaus but leaving him when he changes.

Based on Tightrope from The Greatest Showman (which is amazing btw and if you haven't seen it, you should!)

~Mystic Falls 995 AD~

You were in your room, tending to Klaus' wounds after his father had once again brutally beaten him. You put on your bravest smile and proceeded to comfort him the same way you did.

"Worry not, Niklaus, one day we'll live far, far away from Mystic Falls where you'll be an accomplished painter and I, a world-renowned dancer." You told him with a wide beam.

"How can you be so sure?" He asked you. "What we want is unheard of and should my father even catch the slightest whiff of a plan like this, he would kill me and then die of embarrassment."

"The fact tat Mikael would despise our plan only makes me want it more." You assured him with a chuckle. "And my surety comes from faith. I have faith in the two of us and our ability to beat the odds."

"And what if we were unable to do so?" He asked nervously. "What if we succumb to the normalcy that befalls everyone around us?"

You pressed your lips against his, your fingers tightly wrapped around his face. You pulled away with a grand beam and winked at him. You helped him onto his feet and began to dance with him, tranced in bliss.

"I'd follow you through the great unknown. I don't care what life I have, as long as it is a life with you."

~Russia Present Day~

You arrived at your dressing room, that memory that plagued you before every one of your shows, doing so again.

"Sold out show today, Y/N." The stage manager told you.

"Are you serious?" You asked in surprise. You had done many sold out shows in your chosen profession of ballet but this was the SC Olimpyinski one of the biggest arenas in the world, so you were understandably shocked.

"Yup." She repeated. "Better make it count."

You readied yourself, putting on your white leotard, your hair and make-up styled immaculately before going out into the...empty arena. The arena was supposed to be completely full and yet only one seat was occupied. You gasped as you saw the one person in attendance was none other than Klaus Mikaelson...someone you hadn't seen in nearly five centuries.

He smirked back at you and you realised this was the most nervous you had ever been. However, you steeled yourself and gave a phenomenal performance, impressing Klaus with how much you had improved in your time apart. As you danced he got up from his seat and within seconds he was on stage beside you.

Your breath caught in your throat as you were aware of just how close the blonde was, his blue eyes seeming brighter than you had ever seen. He silently took your hand and danced the waltz that you had practically perfected in your time together. Despite being away from each other for so long, the two of you still fit together like pieces of puzzle.

You stayed like that long past the show's end, only stopping when you figured the silence had gone on for too long. You pulled away, still watching him awe, almost in disbelief that he was there in front of you.

"It's been a while, hasn't it?" He said with a familiar grin.

"That's an understatement." You said with a wry chuckle.

"Yes, I suppose it is." He said with a chuckle of his own. "In fact, we've got five centuries or so to catch up on."

The two of you walked through the streets of Russia as you told him of your success as a dancer and he told you of his daughter and his unfortunate permanent separation from her.

"I'm sorry to hear that." You told him in earnest. "But I am glad to hear that you've been up to lots since I left."

"Did you expect me to not do anything just because you left?" He asked through gritted teeth.

"I was waiting for you to bring that up." You said with a deep breath.

"Five hundred years? Because that's how long I've had to wait for an explanation." He continued. "I hope it's good."

"I left because you made it clear where we stand, Niklaus." You said with a sigh. "I wanted bigger things, I wanted to be praised by the world at large and you..."

"I wanted the same thing." He countered. "That is no excuse."

"You did, but you wanted to be feared." You explained further. "You wanted the world to hear your name and quake with terror and I honestly couldn't think of anything worse."

"And instead of discussing it with me, you ran like the coward you were." He spat out with anger, causing yours to surge also.

"I am not a coward!" You snapped. "Multiple times I expressed my displeasure and if I was not ignored then I was mocked. You didn't care about me or what I wanted."

The two of you were quiet for a moment as you watched the gentle sway of the river before you.

"You once said, you would follow me through the unknown, that you didn't care about what life you had as long as it was me." He murmured quietly. "What changed?"

"You did." You answered. "You weren't the same person I loved. The one who wanted to have his paintings everywhere for people to see and enjoy. You were Klaus, the man who wanted to murder and main any and all of his opposition."

"And what was so wrong with not wanting to be oppressed?" He asked you angrily.

"It was wrong that you didn't love me anymore!" You confessed. "Be honest with me! You didn't care when I left! You didn't think about what you could have done to change things! I'm not stupid enough to believe you had been looking for me for five hundred years! If you really did care about me as you think you did, it would not have taken this long for us to reunite!"

"Is that what you think?" He asked in disbelief, raising his voice at you. "What if it took me decades to learn how to sleep without you beside me? What if every minute of every day I longed to hear your voice? What if every time the door opened I hoped it was you coming back to me? What if the minute I located you I saw every single performance? What if it took me five hundred years to gain the courage just to speak to you? What if I fell apart without you? What if I did not feel whole without you? What if I still don't? What then, Y/N?"

"Say it is." You said quietly.

"What?"

"Say that is true." You continued. "No what ifs, hypotheticals or wishful thinking. I want a concrete confirmation."

"Of course it's true, Y/N." He assured you. "Losing you is not a fate I would wish upon the dregs of humanity. You are one of the best things that ever happened to me and—"

You cut him off with a kiss to the lips, your fingers entangling themselves in his blonde locks and his snaking around your waist tightly.

"What do you want Niklaus?" You asked him.

"I don't want to have to wait five hundred years to catch up with you, that's for certain." He said with a chuckle. "What about you?"

"I want to go off to a world that we call our own." You replied.

"You always were a dreamer." He said with a chuckle.

"Always and forever."
