Chapter Twenty - Three

I never thought it would end like this.

Maybe I was naive to assume I'd last as an immortal. Maybe I was arrogant to assume this second chance at life would last. Hell, with my life, it was stupid to think I'd make it to my twentieth birthday.

I was stupid to not get out before it got to this point. I was stupid to think my immortality meant invincibility. I was stupid to believe I had a future.

At least I didn't die in Mystic Falls.

Once again, I am disconnected from my sister. I can see her sobbing beside my body, but I can't feel her grief. I'm stuck with my own, mourning myself and what little I had to look forward to.

Damon's standing next to her, a hand on her shoulder as he stares at Stefan's body. His jaw ticks at the sight. He's holding it in better than Elena, but I know he's just as devastated.

Caroline's been crying too, having been the one to watch Stefan die. It wasn't until Bonnie needed help with my body that she realized I had died too. They put our bodies in the dorm's common area, side by side.

"What a coincidence for both of our hearts to be ripped out," I comment, trying to make light of the situation. Bonnie had a solution to bring us back, but the great nothing ruined it.

Stefan's standing beside me, both of us in front of our respective bodies. Thankfully, our bodies are hidden by the blankets Caroline threw over us. I don't know if I can handle seeing myself desiccated and bloody again. I know I can't see Stefan like that.

"Tell me we can bring them back!" Caroline suddenly demands, breaking the sobbing.

Damon swallows, preventing himself from saying anything disheartening. He's fighting to stay strong.

"We'll bring them back," Damon nods numbly yet determined.

I look over at Stefan. He's hardly said anything since our bodies were discovered.

"Hey," I say, grabbing his hand to get his attention. He looks over at me. "We're gonna figure this out."

"I'm not sure," he admits and it makes my heart drop. He's right, but negativity like that isn't needed right now.

The sudden rumbling makes Stefan and me frown. I check our friends' reactions, but it's like they don't even hear it.

I stumble against a pillar as the ground begins to shake. "Stefan?"

"Grab something," he warns over the rumbling.

I grip the pillar just as I'm swept off my feet. I can feel the air trying to drag me down the hall. I look back in time to see Stefan lose his grip.

My eyes widen as he's being dragged toward the window. He attempts to grip the floor, but there's nothing for him to hold on to.

I watch in terror as he flips in the air, just in time to grab the corner.

"Hold on!" I yell, hoping he can hear me.

I watch helplessly as his grip starts to slip. Suddenly, a woman's hand grabs him, saving him from the other side's temper tantrum.

I let out a sigh of relief when he's pulled to safety.

After a few more moments, the rumbling stops. I'm dropped unceremoniously to the ground, not sticking the landing.
