"Commander." Your voice was curt, unattached as you addressed Gabriel, regarding him with as much professionalism as you could muster under the circumstances. Your eyes skimmed his face, looking for any changes in his expression as you stood in his office door.
There weren't any. "Agent."
You wanted to call him out for pulling rank on you, but you knew that wouldn't be fair. You were the one who'd started it, after all. "Do you have a moment, sir?" The word felt foreign on your tongue. He was your commander, but you'd stopped referring to him as such long ago, at least as far as private conversations went.
Sly remarks exchanged in passing, just quiet enough for nobody else to hear; eyes meeting for the slightest of moments during mission debriefs, lingering only long enough for it to not appear strange to any of the other agents; a single kiss, desperate and prolonged in his office months ago, never to be brought up again. He was more than a commander to you. You were sure you were more than an agent to him. That only made what he was doing to himself that much more worse in your eyes.
"Make it quick, agent. I'm in the middle of something." He set his paper work aside. It only took a glance for you to know that it was untouched, but you held your tongue.
You closed the door and made your way over to his desk, choosing to stand despite the chairs that were right next to you. "I'd just noticed that you'd gotten back from your little check-up with Dr. O'Deorain. I thought I'd see how you were faring. Rumor has it that her treatments can be quite intense." You bristled at the dark look he gave you. "I apologize if I'm overstepping any boundaries, sir. I'm only worried for my commander's health."
Studying you wearily, he leaned back in his seat. "Enough with the commander sh*t. I get it. Just say what you need to say, (Last Name)."
"I want you to stop." You relaxed your shoulders as you spoke. The skepticism you held regarding Moira O'Deorain's intentions was no secret, but you'd never actively went out of your way to speak to Gabriel about it .
He grimaced. "I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to."
You chuckled incredulously. "Come on, Gabriel. You may be keeping this secret from the others, but I'm not so easily fooled. Whatever you're letting Moira test on you . . . you shouldn't be. She's corrupt. Everything about her is; from her experimentation methods to however it is she's managed to secure so much funding."
"Watch it, I'm the one who approves the requests for that funding."
"For some of it," you interjected. "There's no way all of that money was given to her by Overwatch."
"We're Blackwatch agents." Gabriel watched you with tired eyes as you crossed your arms. "Some things we do aren't legal. And we employ a fairly strict don't-ask-don't-tell policy. You should know this by now."
"It shouldn't apply when it puts our organization in danger, though!"
"We need to cross a few morally grey areas and take some risks." He was getting louder now. "God knows Talon does it. Moira is our best bet at keeping up with them as far as biological technology goes."
