Chapter 4
Eric Pov.
When we hear another muffled scream, me and Four start to sprint towards the scream. When we turn the corner, Shai is sobbing into her hands with her back against the wall. She looks up at me and Four and just stares at the wall. I crouch next to her and ask, "What happened?" She looks at me. "P-PP-Peter..." She stutters. "Tri-tried to r-rr-rape m-me." She finally gets out. I glance at Four, he has a confused face. I turn back to Shai. "Did he do anything before he ran off?" Four questions. She looks at him then back at me. "He, he tou-touch-ed m-me." She stutters again. Anger boils inside of me. Then I feel this protective feeling inside that I felt back in Erudite, when I had feelings for her. I stand back up and I hold my hand out for her to take. She hesitates but takes it and pull her up. I turn to Four and whisper so only he can hear. "I'm gonna take her back to my apartment, so she can calm down." I whisper. He nods. "Come on." I say and she follows me through the halls. I can tell she is shaking with fear as we go through the halls. "If we run into any one, were going to say that you got in a fight and I am taking you to your punishment. Okay?" I glance at her. She nods.
Luckily we don't run into any one. When we get to my apartment I let her go in first. She walks in and looks around. "Is this your apartment?" She asks. "Yes, I figured need a place to calm down." I say dropping my keys on the kitchen counter. She walks over to couch and sits down. She brings her knees to her chest and hugs them tightly. Then she lays her head on her knees and sobs. "Why did this have to happen on the first day? The first day!" She almost yells. I shake my head. "Peter is just a sick Candor." I say sitting next to her in a safe distance. She shakes her head. "I moved to Dauntless to get away from all the horrible memories but I can't because Peter is here and he knows everything. Everything that happened in Erudite!" She yells, still sobbing. "Knows what? That we used to hang out?" I ask. "No, something much worser." She shakes her head. "What is it? I won't tell anyone I promise. I may not be the same way back in Erudite but I'm still the same Eric." I say putting a hand on her back rubbing circles. She stiffens a little then relaxes. She looks up at me. "You promise?" I nod. "Promise."
"After my mother said that I couldn't see you any more. I got so mad that I yelled at my mom and said things that I didn't know I had in me. So she gave me punishments every time I lied or snapped at her. And those punishments were..." She takes a breath. "She would have a guy either from Erudite or Candor around the same age as me. Come over and she would let them..." She starts to cry. I scoot her closer to me. She lays her head on my chest. "She would let them rape me for my punishments..." I stare at her in shock. Who cruel person would do that to their own daughter! "And.. Peter was one of those boys and he told me in the hallway that he wanted a round two." She starts to sob even more. I wrap my arms around her into a tight hug. "I'm so sorry." I say to her. "It will be okay." She slowly stops crying and sits up. "Thank you." She says. "For what?" I ask. "For still being there for me." She says. "I will always be there for you." I say with a little smile. She gives me a sad smile. "If he does this again you have to tell me or Four." I say. "And I think we need to let Four know this." She starts to shake her head. "I don't want him to know that I was sexually abused!" She yells quietly. "Shailene, are you sure you don't want me to tell him?" She looks at me. "I don't trust him, yet." She says.
I nod and she goes to the bathroom to clean her self up and I walk her back to the dorms. When she leaves I get a feeling inside of sympathy for her but I can't show it to her because she needs to learn that she needs to be strong and try her best to push it away. I think also I am starting to get feelings for her but I just ignore them for now at least.
