I sat next to Eddie opposite Annie. She seemed nice to me. From her huge assets it was not difficult to guess what attracted Ed towards her. Ed was telling something about me to her when my mind drifted to the last class with Jon Carles.
"What are you doing Ms. Scott?" He asked as he bent over my desk from behind me and looked into my desktop. I could feel his chest against my back. His placed his right hand over mine with which I was holding the mouse. I snapped at him, which caused him to retreat and he went back to teaching. However, Matt noticed his little stunt.
"What was that Emma?" He asked me as soon as we left the class. I tried dodging his question but he was persistent.
"I don't know Matt what you saw or it appeared to you as." I tried to play cool, but I was shivering way too much.
"Emma..."
"Hey, stop Emma me. I am fine Matt. Look" I fake-beamed at him. He came closer to me and cupped my face. His eyes, bright blue eyes bored into mine as if he could see the whole universe in mine. I dared not to blink. He sighed and let me go. I felt embarrassed and so I fled.
"Right Emma?" Ed's voice brought me back to reality.
"Hmm? Did I miss something?" I asked
"You zoned out silly." Ed said striking my head with his index finger. I felt a vibration running up my thighs, okay my cell phone.
"Hey Lisa. What's up?" I asked her as I picked her call. Ed shuddered beside me.
"What about a girl's night out?" She asked, jumping with excitement.
"Sure, my place or your?" I asked her.
"My place, pretty please." She pleaded.
"Done, I will get there by 7:00"
I jogged to her place, it was a quiet evening, sun sank lower in the sky behind the ranges embracing the Mint Town. Silhouettes of birds flew home across a sky. the mosquitos were out, and the slight chilly wind caused the hair at my arms to rise. I was wearing a purple sleeveless top with ripped capri and my favourite pair of purple-white sports shoes. As the night deepened random light of fireflies blinked more frequently. I soon reached her place with a duffle bag on my shoulder.
"Hey, baby girl." Lisa threw herself on me. I craved for more air.
"Can we please go inside?" I asked her from within her hugs.
Her place was same as I remember. A small two-story house with slanted roof and a small yet dainty garden at the entrance. Inside was the living room all painted in white and baby pink attached to which was an elegant dining area. We ran upstairs to her room. I took in the view that greeted me. The same pale-yellow walls, adorned with posters of some flimsy actress who was too hot to handle, her comforter was pulled over her double-bed weights down by her laptop. There stood her massive dresser with a mirror on its top pushed against the wall beside her study table. The table was as usual messy with a book, some notepads and pencils. She dragged me to her bed and we sat together reminiscing good old days.
"Girls, dinner time." A familiar voice called us after an hour or half.
"Coming, momma." With that Lisa and I jumped down the staircase to the dining room. I was on the last steps when I froze. Jon Carles stood elegantly before me eyeing me like a hunter. He was very handsome, suffice to say, his eyes, posture, gesture were filled with confidence. He passed another of his dreaded smiles to me. I did not return his gesture and sat beside Lisa on the far end of the dining table. Misa too joined us, she sat across me beside her fiancée. They talked lightly about whatever they wanted. I was continuously trying not to make any eye contacts with Jon Carles.
"Hey, lets go for a walk." I asked Li after dinner.
"Sure, let me wear my shoes." We were soon on the roads. If roads were silent then, when I was coming to her place, they were nothing as compared to now. The night had an eerie vibe gushing out of its cloudy skies. A cool breeze whipped between the buildings and sent shivers down my neck. I didn't even realise when Lisa and I took a random turn and we were face to face with the city graveyard. I shivered and slid close to Lisa. She looked at me and held my hand with an understanding smile displaying over her lips. We walked past the graves of several dead people and were soon in the centre of the graveyard.
"You know Em, I am your best friend. You can talk."
