MELANIE BYERS was a stubborn, outspoken but caring teenager who's tendency for proving people wrong was addictive. Being the middle child in the family meant she needed attention, but the thing about Melanie that people adored was her heart. She had a heart of gold and loved anyone and everything she came into contact with, sometimes a little too hard.

"You got suspended again?! What the hell is wrong with you Mel? This is the third time you've been suspended and now I have to have yet another meeting with your principal!" Joyce held the letter up in her hand as she yelled at her daughter, her veins popping out of the forehead.

Melanie bit into her piece of bacon as she listened to constant yelling of her mother, being suspended wasn't any surprise to her. She was pretty used to it by now.

"Mel! Melanie!" She snapped her fingers in front of her face to try and catch her attention, but the teen was far from listening. "Hey! Are you listening to me?"

The teen jumped up a little and continued eating her strand of bacon, completely unaware of the conversation. "Hmm? Y-Yeah I was. Sorry."

Joyce slammed the letter down on the table in front of her. "You know what, that's it! You're grounded for a month! No phone, no leaving the house and no Nancy or Steve!"

"What? No! You can't—"

"I don't wanna hear another word come out of your mouth. I don't want you to leave the house at any point in the day, you understand me? You want anything, you call me or wait till Jonathan or I get home." She instructed as she rushed to get her jacket and shoes on.

Melanie rolled her eyes at her mother and pushed herself off from her seat. "So you're putting me on house arrest?! You can't do that mom!"

Joyce grabbed her keys from the table, shoving them in her pocket. "Melanie, the only time I can be ninety percent sure that you aren't causing trouble is in this house."

"This is so unfair! I can't wait till I move out of this house!" She headed out of the kitchen and to her bedroom, barging into Jonathan on her way.

Jonathan narrowed his eyes at her, completely confused on what he had done to aggravate her. "Wha—You could've said excuse me!"

Melanie ran into her bedroom, slamming the door shut. She flopped on her bed and began pressing numbers in the phone desperately trying to call her best friend.

Melanie wasn't always best friends with Nancy. In fact, they hated each other. Being the popular girl at school, she needed someone by her side and that happened to be the one and only Steve Harrington. The two dated from the middle school all the way through sophomore year but parted due to them drifting apart.

So when Nancy Wheeler started to date Steve... you can guess the little miss popular wasn't having any of that.

"What the hell, Mel? How could you get suspended again?" Nancy yelled frustratedly down the phone.

She rolled over onto her stomach and twirled her finger around the cord, bringing the phone closer to her ear. "Dude can you stop yelling at me please?! It's not my fault the girls are jealous of my good looks Nance. I wouldn't have even fought them if they weren't talking shit about me. You know I hear everything."

"You threw a chair at one of them... a chair! How is that not your fault?!" Nancy complained.

"Sometimes it's good to back down." Steve advised from the background,Melanie scrunched her face up and scoffed.

She let go of the cord and sneered. "Maybe you should use your own advice. You're worse than I am."

"Okay I'm not like that anymore and that's besides the point—"

"Steve stop talking please?! Anyways listen Mel, what you did was a little out of order but the suspension is only two days so that should be alright." Nancy said half heartedly. Part of her was hoping her best friend would return back to school and the other part of her was hoping that she didn't.

Nancy didn't like seeing Melanie get into trouble and was always the one who seemed to bail her out of it. But not this time, this was far from her reach.

"I guess so." Melanie exhaled heavily and ran her fingers through her silky voluptuous hair. "My mom has gone out to work so I'll try sneak out and meet you guys after school."

"Cool." "No." The couple said in unison. Steve quickly changed his answer to one Nancy approved of.

"That is such a b-bad idea."

Melanie chuckled mockingly, she could picture the look on Steve's face without even having to see him physically. They just knew each other so well. "Steve I never would've thought Nancy Wheeler was in charge of your mouth. Anyways, talk later. Toodles."

She placed the phone down and dropped to her knees to try find her 'secret stash' underneath her bed. In the secret stash contained:

• cigarettes
• lighters
• marijuana
• beer
• sodas
• other types of drugs
• some tampons?

Melanie opened up the box and selected her already rolled up joint and lighter, she balanced it between her lips and lit the end of it. Just as she was about to inhale, the phone rang again. She groaned slightly and pressed the end of the joint on the wooden floor, she picked up the phone and answered. "Hello?"

"Melanie! It's Bob." An enthusiastic voice said down the phone.

"Ugh... What do you want?"

He stammered. "Uh,y-your mom said I should call to check up on you, make sure you haven't left the house."

She rolled her eyes and dropped the joint on her bedside table, her legs crossed and mind elsewhere. "Yeah well all my friends are at school and there's nowhere for me to go, so I'm at home. Alone."

"Good, awesome. I-I'll tell Joyce right—"

Melanie placed the phone back into its compartment and relit the joint, putting it between her lips. She finally inhaled and blew out the smoke.

"Time to sit around and do nothing." She pressed the play button on her radio and a soft instrumental began playing through the speakers, Mel leaned her back against the bed and stretched her legs out. She had her joint in her hand, a soda in the other and soothing music playing in the background.

This was her perfect day.
