Depending On Hope

The fallowing morning they woke to the putrid odor of death from the pilot's body. When walking in the direction of the tarp, they noticed it had been slightly tampered with. The area had what appeared to be a set of animals paw prints, not appearing to belong to the dog. The prints showed the details of large claws. It was evident that the body needed to be buried for health and safety reasons along with respect for the pilot. The body would be securely buried within the tarp and the grave would be clearly marked for retrieval upon rescue.

After the burial was completed, they took turns saying a few words about their short experience with the pilot. Dustin started... His name was Hershal Bentley... His license said he was fourty-eight. There was more to him than that... He was a kind hearted man, an organ doner, who kept us safe during the crash. I will be eternally grateful that he protected you two..."

Mike spoke next.  "I didn't know him really well, but he was really nice. He had a good dog, and I know he loved him... And he was passionate about what he did as a pilot..."  After Mike was finished, Carol Lynn stepped forward toward the crude dug grave and made her thoughts known. "I carved this for Hershal, it's a wooden cross with our names carved on it. He will always be with us..." She started singing a song in dedication to him... "This song helped me get through the loss of our parents, and I hope it brings comfort to you..."

One day shy of eight years old,

When grandma passed away.

I was a broken hearted little boy,

Blowing out that birthday cake.

How I cried when the sky let go,

With a cold lonesome rain.

My mom smiled, said: "Don't be sad child.

"Grandma's watching you today."'

"cause there's holes in the floor of Heaven,

"And her tears are pouring down.

"That's how you know she's watching.

"Wishing she could be here now.

"An' sometimes if you're lonely,

"Just remember she can see.

"There's holes in the floor of Heaven

"And she's watching over you and me.

"Seasons come and seasons go,

Nothing stays the same.

I grew up, fell in love,

Met a girl who took my name.

Year by year, we made a life,

In this sleepy little town.

I thought we'd grow old together,

Lord, I sure do miss her now

Nothing stays the same.

I grew up, fell in love,

Met a girl who took my name.

Year by year, we made a life,

In this sleepy little town.

I thought we'd grow old together,

Lord, I sure do miss her now."

'cause there's holes in the floor of Heaven,

"And her tears are pouring down.

"That's how you know she's watching,

"Wishing she could be here now.

"An' sometimes if you're lonely,

"Just remember she can see.

"There's holes in the floor of Heaven

"And she's watching over you and me.

"Well my little girl is 23,

I walk her down the aisle.

It's a shame her Mom can't be here now,

To see her lovely smile.

They throw the rice, I catch her eye,

As the rain starts coming down.

She takes my hand; says: "Daddy don't be sad,

'cause I know Mama's watching now."

I walk her down the aisle.

It's a shame her Mom can't be here now,

To see her lovely smile.

They throw the rice, I catch her eye,

As the rain starts coming down.

She takes my hand; says: "Daddy don't be sad,

'cause I know Mama's watching now."

"'cause there's holes in the floor of Heaven,

"And her tears are pouring down.

"That's how you know she's watching,

"Wishing she could be here now.

"An' sometimes if you're lonely,

"Just remember she can see.

"There's holes in the floor of Heaven

"And she's watching over you and me."

Watching over you and me.

Watching over you and me.

Watching over you and me.

It took several minutes to get back to the beach. They were half way back, when Mike pointed up to a tree. Carol and Dusty looked up, smiling. Two trees, each holding three bunches of bananas. What luck! They would spend the next few hours brainstorming how to harvest the bananas, as they grew hungrier with each passing moment. It was decided upon that Dusty would climb the tree to harvest the bananas. He would tie a rope around the tree, then to his waist to keep him from falling.

That evening they ate the last of their rations without fear because they now had a source of food they all enjoyed.  Finding the food led them into discussing further survival needs, such as fresh water, other tropical fruits and nuts they may find.  They thought about fishing and trying out bird eggs.  They could stay upon the island until rescued if these ideas could be accomplished.
