The cold was unbearable this morning. I felt a bead of ice slowly form on my cheek. I wrapped the fuzzy blanket around myself, hoping it might grant some brief heat from the freezing temperatures. The air nipped at my toes and fingers. The last thing I wanted to do that morning was to wait for the maintenance man to come fix my small, wall-unit thermostat. My whole apartment seemed to be slowly freezing. I could swear all of the picture frames were freezing over...
The only sound I could hear was the teasing hum of my neighbor's thermostat. Why did they get heat and I didn't? It's a cruel world. I closed my eyes and tried to imagine a warm breeze rushing over my body, but when I opened them again, I was back in my cold, messy, cramped apartment.
The sun fought against the clouds, but it still was grey outside. Cold and very grey. I slowly detached myself from the faux leather couch and went to pour myself a hot mug of coffee, maybe it would warm me up. My feet brushed against the cold floor. Usually, the colorful wood comforted me, but today I would have given my right (and possibly left) arm for a plush, heated, carpeted floor, but those were expensive and money was something I didn't have much of. I approached my kitchen, blanket in hand. I grabbed a mug and poured the last of the coffee from the machine. I waded through the freezing air back to the comfort of the warm couch. I plopped down on the cushion and continued to wait for my savior, the bringer of heat, who I feared would never come. There was a knock at the door, the maintenance man! I stood up to open the door but plopped back down when I heard a key turn and the door opened. The maintenance man wouldn't have a key to my apartment. Now that would be a story to tell to the non-existent grandchildren. The door slammed shut and in came a soaking boy.
