I Guess We're Off

I stood there, holding Simon for a while. It felt like I was going to lose my mind.

"I am sorry Simon, this must all be my fault." I cried silently. "That day when we fought, I was so mad at them."

Simon looked at me, he looked very confused. He didn't know what just happened.

"Just turned into dust! I don't know what happened." I heard a faint voice from the TV.

"Thousands of people in London just turned into ashes." I walked to the tv with Simon still in my arms, I was surprised. "No one has ever seen this before, we are waiting for scientists to run their tests and see what this is."

I looked at Simon, he cooed at me I was lost in his bright, unknowing eyes when the reporter surprised me.

"Please, any children who don't have any near relatives to go to, the nearest police station will help." She looked to the side of the camera and nodded. "If the station is empty, go to a hospital or fire station, if the unlikely thing that they are empty too get yourself to London, we will have people at the station here."

I had been distracted from my crying, knowing I had to be the sister my dad told me to be, I started packing. I put Simon back in his high chair. I didn't take much, I got my favourite yellow sweater, a pair of black jeans, a black and white striped tee-shirt, grey sweatpants, a pair of green sweat shorts with green velvet sides and a pink tee-shirt with that. I also grabbed lingerie of course.

Then we had Simon's stuff, it was smaller but I needed diapers. I grabbed 12 diapers hoping it would be good. I just grabbed the first best ten clothes for him.

I then took my toothbrush and toothpaste. When I did I saw my mother's engagement ring on the sink, I remembered how she told me that she never put it on until after breakfast, she would always drop it in her food while eating. I picked it up and examined it, the rose gold ring was beautiful but it was nothing to the beautiful pink diamond on it, at least I think it it's a diamond.

I found a golden chain and put the ring on making it a necklace. "I am so sorry mom." I took some money, knowing I would have to get to Queens in some way. Queen's is all the way in New York, I won't be getting there in a while.

I grabbed my little brother's dark blue stroller and carefully laid Simon down in it. I realized that I didn't have any food for Simon and took some food that didn't need to be in a refrigerator and we were off on our journey, all the way to Queens.

"I don't have anything of value!" I almost screamed, protecting my tiny brother.

I was getting robbed by a man in his late 30s, he looked scared but I think I was more scared. His blonde hair was very bright as the moon was shining, his glasses were a little broken but he didn't look weak.

"Then what about that necklace?" He said, almost way too loud for his own good. "Give it to me."

"Please!" I begged. "It's all I have left from my mother, she and dad died in the dust thing."

I had one hand on the stroller behind me and one on the ring. I was stuck in an alley with brick walls and there was nowhere to run. I tried to back away from the man but the stroller soon hit a wall behind me. Why do they make these alleys?

I heard as metal scraped against metal, the man pulled out a gun and pointed it towards me.

"No, I beg you," I said, almost tearing up. "Don't shoot."

"Then give me the necklace." I only shook my head as an answer. "Then, I will have to take it from your dead body."

I started to feel angry, scared and sad, I closed my eyes, almost accepting my faith. I took the had that I had on the stroller and put it in front of my face. I knew that it wouldn't help but for some reason, it felt safer that way.

I heard my own heartbeat, it only made me panic more. I heard a clicking noise and then I saw a bright light. Suddenly everything was quiet.
