Years have passed since Don Hidalgo Cortez had left the city of Pythia. This notorious criminal had fled the city, carrying along him the child Constantina, whom he stole from his former best friend Don Rico Valderrama.
Don Hidalgo did not keep his promise of paying Don Rico for the child. Instead, Don Hidalgo kept the child for himself and fled. A year after he fled, he married a former prostitute named Amanda Porfirio. The woman was of superb beauty, which appealed very much to the desire of Don Hidalgo.
Amanda found a new hope when she met this man. She looked on to him as the one who would take her form the world where she was in and bring her a brighter future.
Don Hidalgo treated his wife very dearly. Every day, he would take his wife into a date. Finally, the couple had their civil wedding.
However, Don Hidalgo and Amanda did not have any children. And so, as years passed by, Don Hidalgo changed.
The criminal sadistically treated his wife, even telling her shameful past on her face. He would often beat his wife, say abusive words on her, and force her to have sex with him. All of these Don Hidalgo would do while in the influence of drugs.
Don Hidalgo would also burst in anger whenever he lost much money in gambling, as well as when his men got caught by the police. In these instances, he would direct his ire to his poor wife Amanda.
Finally, unable to bear the pain inflicted on her, Amanda fled from the house of her husband. Although this ended the suffering for the woman, this marked the start of a bitterer life for Constantina.
