At the bottom of the staircase was a room about twice the size of the one above, but still pretty small. A single candle lit the room with a dim, yellow flame. Ella couldn't see much except for a wooden table in the middle of the room with a bunch of unlit candles and a jar. She shone her torch around the room. A dark shadow passed in one of the corners. Ella tiptoed over to the corner filled with spider webs and cockroaches. there was a piece of material draped over a beam on the wooden roof like a curtain. She could tell that it had been doubled over.

Suddenly, a series of wild movements disturbed the stillness of the sheet. She stepped back, behind the table and turned her torch off. After a couple of seconds, it was completely still again. Ella gathered her strength and approached the red curtain. She found the edge, tilted her head back and closed her eyes like she was scared that an animal like a mole or possum will jump out. She waited. Her heart pounded as she opened her eyes into a squint and to her complete surprise, a bat scrambled and fluttered out, but this bat didn't look like any other bat she had seen before. It's not like she has seen millions of wild bats but she has seen them in movies, books and on the internet and in all of those combined, she had never seen one like this.....
