Shoelaces

Dan woke up to what sounded like tapping on his window, however after checking the window, there was no Phil.

Dan couldn't sleep, again. He was re-reading his textbooks out of sheer boredom.
It wasn't even 5 am.

Knock-knock

It was on his bedroom door. Dan panicked and hastily turned off his light and climbed under his sheets, shaking.

"Dan I saw your light a second ago" His dad's voice echoed through their rather empty house
"Nuh-uh" Dan replied "You didn't"
"Are you awake?" His dad laughed
"No" Dan replied
"Can I come in?"
"No"
"Does that mean yeah? I want to give you a hug before work"

"Yeah" Dan smiled as his dad opened the door.

Dan's dad didn't smell like his dad though. He smelled like man-perfume and paper and clean-shaven face and work. Dan hated that.

"See ya tonight- Danny" He laughed, messing up Dan's curly hair more than it already was.
"See ya" Dan replied as his dad closed the door again.

And Dan was alone
Briefly.

Because only minutes after he heard the car leave the driveway, Dan heard the infamous knocking on his window

Phil

"It's bloody freezing" Phil sighed as Dan opened the window. Phil was wearing a teeshirt and shorts in the middle of November.
"Yeah! You're shivering so much!" Dan helped Phil over to his bed, wrapping him in Dan's duvet
"Thanks Dip" Phil smiled

\/\

"Wait- Why're you in shorts and a teeshirt?" Dan raised his eyebrow
"Not important" Phil muttered quietly
"What?"
"It's not important, Dan," Phil said again
"Promise?" Dan whispered.

"No" Phil replied, equally as quiet.

Phil had never said no to a promise. Neither had Dan. Except there Phil Lester was, wrapped in Dan's duvet shivering from wearing summer clothes during winter, denying a promise.

"Oh-" Dan's voice cracked slightly. He didn't know why but he was so hurt by Phil denying a promise.
"Got anything planned today Dan?" Phil smiled slightly, not even phased by what he did.

It must've not mattered that much, clearly.

"No" Dan replied, sharper than expected
"Well, my mum has spare tickets to Flushed Away if you wanna come with us"
"Yes!" Dan exclaimed happily. He hadn't been to the cinema in a long time.

"Wanna go to the lake while we wait?" Phil laughed at Dan's reaction. "Not the popular lake- our lake"

"Their lake" was a lake in the paddocks behind Phil's house that nobody visited. Everyone went to the big lake in the park cause adults watch over and the ice is usually thicker apparently.

"Okay- Do you want some warmies?" Dan giggled
"Yes please" Phil replied, grinning

\/\

"Sorry for not promising Dip earlier" Phil mumbled, as Dan rested his head on Phil's shoulder "I just- I would rather not promise something than break one of our promises. They're sacred"
"Yeah- I was just kinda surprised" Dan replied,
"I don't ever wanna break one of our promises, cause y'know- it would make you sad"

Dan didn't know how to reply to that, but it was okay.

Because they could sit in silence, and still be comfy.

So they sat on the lake edge, fingers intertwined, Phil's thumb running up and down Dan's hand, Dan's head on Phil's shoulder, sitting in silence. But it was enough.

It was more than enough, it was everything.

And they stayed like that, saying nothing. At some point, their hands detached and Phil draped his arm protectively over Dan. Dan felt safe under Phil's arm.

\/\

"Dan we should probably get back" Even though Phil whispered, it still echoed slightly.
"Yeah" Dan replied, but neither of them moved.

Queer

Dan hadn't thought about that word in a while. He wanted to know so badly what it meant, but he didn't want to upset Phil. He also didn't want to search it up, in case it was a really bad word. So he sat in slight confusion.

Phil slowly got up, before offering to help Dan up, too.

"Thank's Pip- But I got this" Dan smirked confidently, Phil giggled and Dan hoisted himself up.

Except he wasn't up for very long. Because almost as soon as he had stood up, he was falling back down.

And, more importantly, into the lake.

\/\

Dan was pulled out of the lake seconds after he had fallen in. Phil clearly wasn't about to let him drown.

"Dan?" Phil worriedly rested Dan's head on his lap "Dan what happened?"
"Orthostatic Hypotension" Dan replied, annoyed. "It really sucks"
"Ortho- what?"
"Orthostatic Hypotension," Dan said, again "Blood pressure stuff"
"Are you okay?"
"I'll be fine." Dan smiled "No need to worry"
"You just randomly fell into the lake, Dan, that's usually a worrying sign."
"Yeah" Dan laughed "I guess it kinda is. Also, your shoelace is undone"
"When isn't it undone?" Phil smirked "I'll tie it up when you aren't lying on me"

\/\

When Dan got home, he pulled out his journal.

He hadn't opened it for a while. He wrote

"Orthostatic Hypotension sucks"

Not sure how to follow up that statement. Dan wanted to be the kind of person who journaled things, but he couldn't ever commit.

"Dinner-" His dad called from downstairs

Dan put the book back in his drawer, before going downstairs.
