I sat in that room for a long time, thinking about how I was going to break the news to everyone. Everyone was going to support me most likely, but there will be a few that will be disappointed in my decision. However, I feel like my choice is the best choice for me at this current point in time.
First step was to break the news to everyone. The best way to go about this would to make an announcement during the ball where everyone was present. After that I'll just play it by ear and hope for the best. I left the room and headed straight back to the ballroom. Princess Ava was finishing up with her dancing. Luckily, none of the princes would have to suffer through any more of her attempts at the waltz.
I began to climb the steps up towards the balcony with confidence. Guests began to notice me and my manner. A hush fell over the room as they waited to see what my purpose was for standing among them. The orchestra ceased to play and all eyes were on me.
"Good evening, everyone!" I began to project my voice. "I hope all of you are having a grand time. I stand here before you all to make an important announcement."
The crowd began to whisper, guessing what the news could possibly be. Princess Ava began to wildly scan the room as the attention surrounded me more and more with each passing second.
"Many of you have expressed your concern with Princess Ava becoming the next queen. Many of you have held conversations about who should be next in line for the throne. The king has heard your opinions and he has recently decided to follow his own heart. Princess Ava will not be your next queen." I announced.
The crowd gasped and the whispers got louder. Princess Ava grew pale and began to push past the crowd to get to me. "Are you serious? If I'm not going to become queen, then who is? There is no other person that could become queen here!"
"Orion will be the next queen." Royce suddenly emerged from the crowd. The room grew silent as the idea clicked.
"O-Orion as the queen?" Ava laughed. "She isn't of royal blood! She's just the knight!"
The king stood up from his chair and smiled sadly at his stepdaughter. "My dear, Ava. I'm sorry that I've kept this from you this entire time, but Orion is my daughter. My blood runs through her veins. Therefore, she is more than qualified to take the throne."
Ava's laughing fit died out as she let the fact sink in. "Orion is your biological daughter? That means she's been my stepsister this entire time? W-Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Before anyone could answer her, she ran out of the room. Her mother chased after her, shooting me and my father a look of disgust before slamming the door on her way out. The tension in the room faded out as the sources of it left. Everyone felt more free to listen and talk about the news now.
A hand shot up in the air. "Princess Orion, are you really going to take the throne next?"
"Absolutely. I will have to plan my coronation with my father which may take a couple of days but I may wear the crown soon." I answered.
More hands waved in the air, holding questions for me to answer. I pointed to a man in a dark green suit. "Do you plan on retiring from being a knight in order to fulfill your duties as a queen?"
I knew this question was going to pop up sooner or later. Good thing I already had an answer for that one. "I plan on doing many tasks from the castle like a regular queen but my title as a knight still stands. I may venture out from the kingdom from time to time to complete tasks outside like a knight may do. Next question."
"Is there going to be a new royal committee or will the current advisors maintain their positions?"
"That is something I will have to talk with the advisors about. If they do not fit the plans I have then someone else may take their place. However, if they agree to work with me then they are more than welcomed to stay. I have many ideas to help boost our economy and foreign alliances. Everything I wish to do will be beneficial to everyone here. I need all the support I can get so I plan to seek out only the most capable and compassionate." I admitted.
