The clouds had rolled in over the lake, scattering shadows across the glassy surface. I wandered aimlessly through the cabin, trying to get my bearings. It was obvious that Alex had been here before - even though he wouldn't tell me straight out. It was clearly written on his face in a pained expression every time he took a look at his surroundings.
I made my way into the bedroom and saw a queen-sized four poster bed in the middle. A white duvet was pulled up over the mattress and fluffy pillows leaned against the dark wood of the headboard. The frame itself was bare, tall wooden posts forming a cube shaped around the bed. I supposed that there could have been a canopy at some time, but I thought it looked simpler without it.
A couple chairs and bedside tables dotted the room, along with a wardrobe tucked against the wall. An opening in the wall led to the bathroom, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a sunken bathtub in one corner. The shower was large, but didn't have a curtain or anything - there was simply a half wall that would cover the person showering. However, the view of the shower from the tub was completely unobstructed.
A large mirror took up a whole wall, and I fixed a couple strands of hair that had fallen out of place. I laughed a little, most likely out of nervousness. I didn't know why, but for some reason, being here alone with Alex was different from being back home.
Maybe it was because it felt more like a lover's getaway than a roommate's recluse.
I shook my head and finished exploring the rest of the house. The kitchen was large and surprisingly modern for a cabin. I looked longingly around for a moment before walking back into the living room. I saw Alex relaxing on the couch in front of the TV. His eyes were closed, and his expression was peaceful, if not a little strained.
"Hey Alex?" I said softly. I didn't want to wake him if he was sleeping. His eyes fluttered open, and he looked at me. His expression was confused.
"Mom?" He asked. I laughed a little and shook my head.
"Not quite. I was just wondering...is there another bedroom?" I asked. Part of me hoped that he would say no, while the more logical part of me knew that it was a bad idea to get too attached. That would be an interesting conversation. 'Oh yeah, I was hired to make you fall in love with me, but can you keep sleeping next to me I still have nightmares.'
"No, there's not," Alex said, breaking my train of thought. I almost sighed in relief, but quickly caught myself.
"Oh. Okay," I said. There was a knock on the door, and Alex jumped up quickly to answer it. He pulled the door open and I was surprised to see the man from earlier. I think his name was Carlos or something.
"Carlos!" Alex exclaimed. Carlos smiled and hugged Alex.
"Alex!" Carlos said. "I brought you your things. I just drop them off on porch, but then I say, 'I have not seen my Alex boy in almost ten years! I must say hello again.'" Alex laughed and patted him on the back.
"Thanks for dropping our stuff off Carlos. Hey, do you still own your fishing boat?" Alex asked. Carlos nodded enthusiastically. Alex leaned down and whispered in his ear, and Carlos nodded again.
"Yes, yes of course! Anything for my Alex boy and his amigo," Carlos said. Alex grinned.
"Great. Thank you so much Carlos," he said.
"Any time my friend, any time. I must be getting back to the cars, but if you need anything - anything - you just give Carlos a call," Carlos said. Alex nodded and walked outside with Carlos. He came back in a second later alone and carrying our duffle bags.
"Here," Alex said, handing me my duffle.
"Thanks," I replied. I followed him cautiously into the bedroom. He set his duffle on the bed and unzipped it. He began pulling out the clothing he had packed and replacing it in the wardrobe. I continued to stand in the doorway, duffle bag in hand, unsure whether or not he was okay with us sleeping in the same bed again.
"Are you going to unpack?" Alex asked, looking at me. I glanced at him, startled out of my train of thought.
"Oh, right, yeah. Sorry, I was just...thinking," I said lamely. Alex laughed a little. I walked the rest of the way into the room and began unpacking my things.
"So how are we going to do sleeping arrangements?" I asked tentatively, not looking up.
"Well, I was thinking I'll be in here, and you'll be out in the middle of the lake," Alex replied, sarcasm heavy in his voice. I looked up, and he smirked at me. "We'll both be in here, idiot. There's no other bed in the house."
I released a breath I didn't know I had been holding.
"Okay," I said, trying not to let a smiled spread over my face.
"Why?" Alex asked after a moment.
"I just wanted to make sure I wasn't sleeping out in the lake," I replied, grinning. Alex laughed and tossed his duffle bag into the corner.
"Hey, so there's a party tomorrow night. Adults only. You interested?" Alex asked. I almost rolled my eyes. Parties meant alcohol, loud music, and bad flirting. I almost said no, but when it looked up at Alex he seemed genuinely excited.
"Yeah sure, I'll go," I said. Alex smiled broadly.
"Great. Well, I was going to run to the store really quick to pick up some breakfast stuff. Anything you want?" He asked.
"Waffles?" I offered. Alex laughed.
"Okay, anything else?"
"Don't we need stuff for dinner too?" I asked.
"Carlos said he would bring us anything we wanted from room service since they don't deliver it to us out here," Alex replied. I nodded.
"Well, I'll text you if I think of anything else," I said. I tucked my duffle bag into the corner of the wardrobe and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Okay. It should only take a couple minutes. I'll be back soon," Alex said. I nodded and he walked out of the bedroom and through the front door. The heavy oak slammed shut behind him and with that, I was alone.
