"5, 6, 7, 8" the music started and i let loose. dance is one of the most important things to me beside family and friends.
"great work normani!" my dance instructor, and friend, Ally clapped while watching me do the routine. I started at this studio in the 8th grade and have been coming ever since. When I was in the 8th grade Ally was a junior in high school so she's not that much older than me.
"okay guys!" she stopped the music and gathered us in a circle. "we have a newbie joining our crew tomorrow afternoon, you guys know how we introduce new people so be nice and welcoming alright?"
we all nodded and agreed packing up our stuff. I walked to the water fountain and filled up my bottle. Humming the song we just finished dancing too I skipped my way to my car.
"hey! miss!" a voice called out. I rolled my eyes not really in the mood for being hit on. I was sweaty and I had a long list of things to do, shutting down an unattractive middle aged man was not on that list.
"miss!"
I stopped in my tracks and rolled my eyes turning around to see not an unattractive middle aged man, the complete opposite actually. Wow he was really attractive.
"hey.." he kneeled over, "you dropped.. your phone.." he took deep breaths in between every few words.
"oh.." I said unsure if he was telling the truth. I reached into the small pocket of my dance bag when he handed me my blue iPhone5c.
"thank you um.." I squinted at the name tag on his shirt, "Ashton."
"no problem um..." he ran his fingers over the yellow embroidered lettering on my purple dance bag, "nor-mah-ne" he glanced at me for reassurance that he pronounced it correctly and I nodded my head.
"wow and on the first try" he laughed. when I say laugh I mean he giggled, like a little school girl. It was nothing like I'd ever heard before, but it was cute the way his eyes squinted and his nose crinkled up.
"you dance here?" he asked and then slapped his forehead, "of course you do I just watched you.."
my eyes got wide and I took a step back. this is exactly why you don't stop to talk to people, no matter how sweet they seem at first.
"NO! not like I was watching you.. I mean you're a great dancer don't get me wrong! but I wouldn't know that! I mean I would because I saw you but I wasn't just watching you in a creepy way, I was.. I just.. ahh jesus christ ally's my sister.." he finally got it out with a chuckle.
I raised both eyebrows and nodded my head.
"well step-sister.. my mom married her dad.. why am i even telling you this wow" his face began turning the brightest shade of red that I've ever seen.
"you probably have somewhere to be I'm sorry I just wanted to return your phone.." he laughed nervously.
"yeah I do actually um.. thank you.. ashton." I smiled at him.
"no problem normani, I'll see you around.. maybe.. hopefully um.. I'm kind of working here now with ally, it's a summer job, she got me a summer job."
"cool!" I smiled at him and turned to walk to my car.
"bye normani!" he shouted. I turned to see him waving vigorously, so I returned a small wave and got in my car.
"Go home, shower and do online school work" I told myself. That's my plan or it was until I walked into a house full of craziness. I had completely forgot about Lauren coming over today.

Ashton's POV (from a little earlier)
Dance is so fucking cool. I'd do it if I didn't have two left feet. Since I didn't have rhythm I had to sit and watch, which I didn't mind at all because there was some really attractive girls that came in.
The class ended and everyone scattered to get their things. I watched quietly waiting for my step sister to finish her goodbyes so I could sweep the floor and clean the mirrors and junk.
"this is just a temporary thing" I told myself, I didn't want this as a job but I needed money badly. really badly. Lucky for me my sister Ally is a sweetheart and hooked me up with this shit.
I was staring into the dance mirrors when a sudden thump interrupted my thoughts.
My head snapped over to see a phone on the floor and it's owner walking out the door without even noticing it was gone. I walked over and grabbed the phone, checking to see if the screen was cracked. Lucky for her it wasn't but.. oh shit the girl.
I called over to Ally and told her I'd be righ back waving the phone in the air, she nodded understanding what was happening. I ran out the door, down the 3 flights of stairs and searched for that high ponytail I saw a few minutes ago.
I scan the small parking lot and spot my target, "hey! miss!"
she keeps walking so I run after her yelling louder, "miss!"
She stops and turns around. My breath hitches in my throat as i take in the beauty standing right in front of me. I saw her dancing in the studio but I didn't get a good look at her face, thank god she dropped her phone.
"hey.." I kneel over to catch my breath, "you dropped your phone.."
"oh.." she states while feeling inside her bag and I hand her the phone.
"thank you um.." she spots my name tag, "Ashton."
"no problem um..." I glance at her purple dance bag and notice her name embroidered on the side in yellow letters, "nor-mah-ne" I pronounce it as best as I can and look at her for confirmation. She nods with a smile and I feel great.
"wow and on the first try" I laugh, feeling accomplished. There's a small silence of about 5 seconds when I decide to continue the conversation. I can't let her get away that quickly.
"you dance here?" I let out the first thing that comes to mind. You dance here? seriously ash? obviously she just left from the building holding a dance bag.
I slap myself on the head realizing how stupid that probably sounded, "of course you do I just watched you.."
her facial expression changed from confusion into fear and she took a few steps back.
"NO! not like I was watching you.. I mean you're a great dancer don't get me wrong! but I wouldn't know that! I mean I would because I saw you.." I spat out quickly fumbling on my words, "but I wasn't just watching you in a creepy way, I was.. I just.. ahh jesus christ ally's my sister.."
she relaxed a little and nodded her head.
"well step-sister.. my mom married her dad.. why am i even telling you this wow" I felt my cheeks turning red from embarrassment, I don't know why I was so nervous. I've never had this problem with girls.
"you probably have somewhere to be I'm sorry I just wanted to return your phone.." I let out a nervous laugh.
"yeah I do actually um.. thank you.. ashton." she smiled at me and my stomach did backflips.
"no problem normani, I'll see you around.. maybe.. hopefully um.. I'm kind of working here now with ally, it's a summer job, she got me a summer job," again I am rambling on about nothing she needs or even wants to hear.
"cool!" she headed back to her car and I yelped out a quick, "bye normani!" waving my arm with a little too much excitement. She turned and waved before climbing into her drivers seat.
