My father is a demon. I am a witch. Alex is a warlock.

I am a witch. It sounded so weird to say it out loud as I tried to do my homework. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I had powers. Real magic.

I sit up and look around for anything I can mess with. I smile when i see an un lit candle. I focus on it with all my strength. The mirror that sits behind the candle reveals my eyes to be red. Suddenly something shoots from my body to the candle. A flame appears on the candle and all of a sudden, all of the lights in the house start to blink madly.

I look around frantically and the lights become worse. I quickly regain my focus and I whisper, "Stop."

As if it heard me, all of the lights stop blinking and only the candles light remains.

I hold my head high. This power was fun to have. Why would demons want to mess with witches with so much power? I begin to remember what Alex told me as we walked back to my house-

"Don't tell anyone what i just told you. If the wrong people find out, they will come for you."

I nod and he grabs my wrist,"Promise?"

I pull my hand away,"Promise."

He smiles,"Good." He continues to walk now. "Also you should try to find your mom's book."

I frown,"what book?"

"It's a book full of spells. Your magic is useless to you if you dont know any spells."

"Woah! Woah!" I stop him in his tracks. "What is this book called?"

He shrugs,"I dont know. Your ancestors are the ones that made the book, so the title is probably creepy."

"Do you have any idea where I can find it?"

He looks at me like I'm crazy," Esther, I dont even know the title. What makes you think I know where it is?" He walks past me and continues to walk.

I mutter,"Sorry...just asking." I follow him down a hill as my house comes into view.

"While your here at your house, dont try any spells and try to find the book as quickly as possible."

"Okay."

He picks me up and whispers," take her home."

Suddenly I am lifted into the air and I land in my room. I gasp at the feel of flying then i turn around to thank him. But Alex is gone.

I am pulled back into reality when I hear the door bell downstairs. Alex was right. They never noticed I was gone. I stand up and run downstairs. I stop in my tracks when i see a man in a black hoodie standing outside of the doors glass window.

"Get the door Esther!" my grandmother says.

But i dont move a muscle. I just stare at the door. Suddenly the door swings open and the man disappears. Instead, Ravenna stands there witha big smile on her face. "Hey Esther!"

I frown. Did I open the door? Ravenna's smile disappears,"Whats wrong?"

I shake my head snapping out of it,"Nothing. Im so glad your here."

I walk up to her and hug her. But when i hug her my arms burn up. Feeling like they are on fire. I pull away quickly and force a smile.

She frowns,"Esther...are you okay?"

I force a laugh," yea! I'll be right back."

I walk upstairs and she calls after me,"dont take too long were going to eat cake when Katherine comes over!"

I slam the bathroom door and lock it. I grip onto the sink and breathe heavily. What is wrong with me? I wash my face and re apply my make up. Then i decide to look around the bathroom for the book. I open the bottom cabinets and look around. Nothing but bottles of hairspray, shampoo's and a bunch of other bottles but no book.

I hear the front door of the house close and i hear Katherine's giddy voice. Ugh why did i have to have this party?! I stand up and look at myself in the mirror. But i dont see myself. I see a man in a black hoodie.

I scream and slam against the wall. I try to unlock the door but it doesnt work. "UNLOCK!!!!"

The door unlocks by itself and i run out only to slam into my grandma. "Dearest child! Are you okay?"

I catch my breath,"Yes gran...im okay. I just...messed up my make up."

She laughs,"Come on Esther!" She puts her hand on my back and guides me down stairs. Why didnt her touch burn me?

When we walked into the kitchen the lights were off and the cake was sitting on the table. One candle on top. They all began to sing Happy Birthday to me as i sat there not knowing what to do but smile. After they were done my grandma puts her hand on my shoulder and whispers-

"Make a wish dear."

I take a deep breath and wish that the rest of my life was worth living.

If I lived that long.
