I didnt go to school today. While my grandmother went to work at the bakery, I stayed home to look for the book. I began looking through every cabinet and every book case in the library. I even looked in my room and Gran's room. Finally i decide to go back to my parents house. I know i should have done that in the beginnig but if i did Gran would have become suspicious.
I drive to my parents house listening to some music on the radio. The roads seem to be empty around this town. This is where my parents chose to live when they had me. This town used to be a beautiful place to live with green grass, flowers, and friendly people. But that was more than 20 years ago.
Now the town was deserted. Hardly any people lived there except for really poor homeless people. I can feel their stares as i drive down the road toward my parents house. This was the East town. My parents house was a little farm on top of a hill away from the rest of the houses. Beyond the farm was nothing but mountains and the woods. Legend says the woods are haunted by dead witches who were killed by the people who lived there. But this happened in the 1800's and most people today still wont walk in those woods.
Only one person has and yes he came out alive. His name is Chris Robinson. He's the towns bad boy and always will be. No girl can change his ways, not even a nun. I never really payed attention to him but rumor has it that he was dared to walk in the woods and come back out. He did it of course and is still worshipped today.
I park my car infront of the farm and walk up the porch steps. The house was of course vacant, but it was also very old. There were cracks in the windows, the door was falling apart and so were the walls. I shriek as a piece of wood falls off the door when i try to open it. The space between the door and the door frame is a little small, so i squeeze my self between the opening.
Once im inside i sneeze and cough. There is a lot of dust and fungi stuck to the walls and the ceiling. Some parts of the floor has holes in it even some of the walls has some too.
I begin to look around, opening each drawer and looking in every room. Going into my old nursery was the last room I chose to look.
I walk in slowly and look around. My eyes widen as i see blood on the floor next to my old crib. I fall to my knees and trace my fingers on the blood stained floor. Why was this here? Did someone try to kill me as a baby?
Suddenly I feel something in the back of my head. A womans voice whispers-
"Who are you? Why are you here?"
She grabs my arm and pulls me to my feet. I turn around to face her.
Her hair is gray and wavy, her eyes icy blue, her hands were shaking as she held the gun up to my face.
"My name is Esther. Esther Miller. This used to be my room when i was a baby."
The old woman looks at me suspiciously, then grabs my sleeve and pulls it down.
"Hey!!" I pull away and look at my shoulder.
She whispers,"It is you."
I look at her then back at my shoulder. The mark.
"What...what do you mean?" I back away.
She puts the gun down and smiles sadly," I knew your mother. She was a sweet woman."
I smile faintly," Your lucky you knew her." I look down at the floor sadly. "I spent my child hood motherless."
"She loved you Esther. More than you'll ever know."
She hugs me lightly and whispers,"What you seek child....is the book."
I pull away surprised,"How do you know?"
"Dont ask too many questions! Follow me!" She runs down the hall way to a wall. I watch as she mutters words, then suddenly the wall moves to the side revealing stairs going downward. She quickly glides down the stairs while i struggle to keep up.When we reach the bottom of the stairs she whispers-
" Miss Miller's book."
A book flies toward her and she catches it.
"Esther whatever happens, protect this book." She hands it to me and i take it gratefully.
"Whats your name?"
" Juliette."
"Thank you Juliette."
She smiles and closes her eyes and puts her hand on my heart. Power enters my body and I try to fight it. Why was she doing this?!
It lasts for a long while, then suddenly the world starts to shake. I open my eyes which I didnt even notice were closed and see Juliette on the floor. Her body looks weak and tired.
"Juliette!" I bend down next to her.
"Run Esther! The demons are coming!! You have my power now! Run!!"
"But-"
"RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I stand up reluctantly and run up the stairs. The house has become pitch black now. The wind howls through out the house as i run through the dark.
"Light."
I focus on the door way but I am thrown to the ground by a force. My leg was stuck in something. Ugh a hole!
I try to pull it out but I cant move. Something lifts me off the ground and turns me around.
Eyes. Big yellow eyes stares back at me. It growls at me and wraps its hand around my throat.
I struggle to breathe and my body becomes weak.
The strange creature whispers," Esther...."
I try to move but i can't, so i try to use my powers. I look around the room for anything useful.
The creature squeezes tighter on my neck. I choke back my tears and think of a piece of wood. I focus on the object in my head.
"LOOK AT ME ESTHER!!!!"
I look at it and smirk.
"You little witches are so naive."
Suddenly a piece of wood from the ceiling crashes on top of the demon and it lets out a piercing scream.
I scream at him, "Let me....GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The demon lets go of me and i squeeze through the opening of the door way. I run to my car and drive away as quickly as I can.
But I hear the demon scream out,
"I'LL FIND YOU ESTHER MILLER!!! NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST LIKE I PROMISED YOUR MOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I drive away faster and I cry. It all makes sense now.
