“Harry! Where are we going?” Alice shouted, as she accelerated to keep up with me.
We had gone to Beacon County for our vacations. We had settled in the woods because according to my father "Nature's beauty was the best medicine to every problem" and the great aspect of that was that you could find it anywhere.
“Shh,..” I shushed her.
“Are we really going in there?” She asked quietly, when she saw me standing in front of the Beacon County Woods.
I knew this place always scared the Hell out of her. She had never been there except that one time, when she came here with Uncle Max during the Famous Johnson Case, and it was uncle Max who had recommended this place. He was a lawyer and used to come here every year and this time he had brought us all here.
“C’mon don’t be such a chicken” I signaled her to come over.
“I’m not a chicken!” She yelled back.
“Then prove it” I demanded with a smile because I knew that this sentence always hit her and I always kept this as a last resort and I knew that she hated me for this but this also worked and as long, it bore fruit i was not going to lose it. She sluggishly moved towards me and I reached out for her hand. After a long time and hard work, Alice was standing beside me.
We still had to tramp over that gate that looked nothing less than a entrance to a haunted house. I first crossed it and then asked Alice to do the same. She seemed really good at that because in no time she was on the other side of the gate.
"Have you been sneaking in someone's home? because that was really good" I complimented.
“Now what?” she demanded, placing her hands on her hips, completely ignoring my remark although I could see the corner of her mouth twitch.
I, turned around, bent down and plucked a pink flower from the nearest plant, that I had discovered that evening, and showed it to her. Her eyes widened in surprise and then suddenly a huge grin appeared on her face.
“Where did you find it?” she whispered. I stepped aside and let her look at the plant with those pink flowers.
“Oh my GOD..!” and she instantly stooped down and began scrutinizing the plant. I had seen her studying these plants earlier that day and I knew that she was totally into Botany.
We were interrupted by Stiles, who came dashing towards us. He was our cousin, son of Uncle Jeffery, and nothing less than my brother. He wiped his tear-stained face and said, “Harry! Come quickly”.
I knew, then and there, that something was terribly wrong because Stiles was the last person I thought, I would ever see crying. So I nippily grabbed Alice and the three of us started galloping towards the Camp, where our family was!
We ran as fast we could. All terrible thoughts were swarming in my mind, I had this problem that I always thought of the worst possible scenario, but I jostled them out. Our family would be safe, They have to be! But when we reached there, the sight of burning tents, smoking wood hit us right in the gut. The whole place was devastated. Besides the whole mess, there was huge metal sphere, big enough to fit five persons inside it, residing at the centre of this chaos, and it was like it was immune to fire because it was just sitting there in the centre of that fire show.
Alice let out a shrill cry as she started running towards the camp site. We also sprinted towards the site but the fire didn’t let us.
“What happened?” I shouted, looking towards Stiles.
“I don’t know. I just saw that frickin' ball zooming towards our tents, when I was coming back.” He gulped and then continued “It just smashed there" pointing at the tent where father and mother were "and then suddenly fire was everywhere and the whole thing started to collapse.
“ Was anybody outside besides us?” Alice asked, still crying.
“No. they were playing music inside and everybody was dancing”
Stiles and I both looked at each other, fear was evident on his face, and I bet he was thinking the same. We were dead sure that no body was alive because it would have been a miracle of God if someone, who was in those tens, survived that chaotic blow.
“Do you have the satellite phone?” I asked, remembering that father had given me that and I had handed it to Stiles, he nodded. “Try to contact Mrs. Fred” , I said as I tried to find a way through the fire.
I tried calling everybody’s name but no one answered. Nothing except the cold whistling of air and crackling of fire met my ears. It was a sight every 14 year old would never think of seeing but the three of us stood there completely helpless. I kept hoping that someone would come out of that fire, but that sight was just something that my eyes longed to see but never got to actually witness it.
“She has informed Mr. Fred” Stiles just said that and started to help me in making a way into the mishmash. We were not going to give up, not on our family and I am sure that Stiles was more energetic than me, but it was impossible to carve our way in because the fire was raging as it was incessantly being supplied with petrol or something because it was continuously growing.
“It’s impossible to get there” Stiles called out as he kicked a lamp out of his way, while covering his face from the flames with his elbow. What could we do? After all, we were just 14. Alice, meanwhile, moved towards that steel ball which had been evidently the culprit of this chaos. Tears still descended from her eyes. She halted in front of it and extended her hand to touch it.
“Wait” Stiles shouted but it was too late and she had already touched it, and the ball opened with such pressure that she was flung into the air and landed a couple of feet away. I ran to assist her as Stiles moved towards that ball, which was wide open now like a blossomed sunflower, and for the most of it, it was empty. But right in the middle of that something was sparkling in three different colours and involuntarily Stiles entered and grabbed them, forgetting that what just that ball had done to Alice. When I got there, Alice was looking at Stiles with a staggered expression and Stiles was constantly muttering “UNBELIEVABLE”.
