Meanwhile back at the surface, a few among the celebrating monsters had noticed that Sans and Frisk had gone missing. "Why would they just leave for no reason?" Asked Toriel. "M-maybe w-we should l-look for them." Said Alphys. And as if almost on cue, Sans had appeared out of the cave with Frisk in his arms. "SANS!" Said Papyrus. "THERE YOU ARE! WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT YOU!" He suddenly looks at Frisk, "WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE HUMAN? IS SHE SLEEPING?" Sans' eye sockets darkened as he hung his head with grief. Toriel gasped and burst into tears and ran to their side. "W-what happened to her? Y-you didn't do this, did you?" Sans sighed, "i guess i owe you an explanation. she said me it was about time i told you this. ya better sit down for this, it's a long story." Asgore sighed, "As a good thing begins, another ends..."

Everyone had went back into the cave to hear this explanation. Sans told everything. He told about the resets, about Chara, about how she killed everyone, and about how she broke the RESET button to atone for her sins, passing the ability to reset to someone else.

It was difficult for anyone not to feel surprised, shocked, sad, or depressed at this point. But most still cared about Frisk just the same in spite of all things she did and all the secrets kept from them. That day instead of celebrating their freedom, they mourned for the one who made it possible. She was buried in the wishing room in Waterfall. Her grave had Golden flowers and Echo flowers planted over it where the monsters paid their respects toward their savior. For months, Sans had never left her side, for a small part of him believed that Frisk was still there. That even a sliver of her determination remained. He might have thought he had driven himself mad over her. That he imagined things that probably weren't reality. He sometimes saw the echo flowers flicker red, or heard her breathe, sometimes he even felt her sight touch from her soft fingers.

He might have not realized it, but he started to grow very attached. Nobody, not even Papyrus could cheer him up enough to peel him away from Frisk. He would always say, "I'm sad too Sans, but I'm sure that the human would want you to keep going." And Sans would always pretend to be happy and say, "don't worry about it paps. i'll catch up in a bit." But Sans never came back with Papyrus. Alphys had explained to Papyrus that Sans was going through the five stages of grief and they would probably wait for Sans to accept it as quickly as everyone else.

One day, Papyrus went back to Waterfall to visit Sans again. This time Sans was going through the second stage-- Anger. "Sans?' Said Papyrus. "Please come home. Everyone is very worried about you. Just moping outside all the time isn't healthy. and it's not going to bring the human back either." Sans slowly stood up and turned around, his eye glowing with rage. "i should have stopped her." Said Sans. "if i knew that would happen, then maybe... maybe i could have saved her." Papyrus shook his head. "Sans there's nothing you could've done! She's gone now!" Those words hit Sans like a ton of bricks. Suddenly, his magic went completely out of control as he forced the things around them and flung them as he punched the ground with frustration. Including Papyrus, lowering his HP. Once Sans realized what he had done, he immediately stopped. "paps! i'm so sorry!" Papyrus dusted himself off and smiled. "IT'S ALRIGHT BROTHER! THE GREAT PAPYRUS IS ALRIGHT! Now... Let's take you home. Please?'

Sans sighed and gave in. Although he would go through all of the remaining stages of grief, at least there was someone who would help him get through with it.
