The sun rose the next morning while casting a yellow-blue haze in the early sky. And as the sun rose, so did a certain bluenette. But not as gracefully as the sun...
She groggily sat up and rubbed the sleep from her blue eyes. She blinked several times before her vision finally focused on the alarm clock sitting on her bedside nightstand that read 8:01 am. She glanced away and stretched her arms before coming to the realization that she was thirty minutes late to school.
Lapis immediately jumped up and frantically ran around her room to put an outfit together while brushing her wild blue hair into place.
"How the hell did I oversleep?! I set my alarm and everything!" She thought to herself. After brushing her teeth, taking a quick shower, slapping on some makeup, putting on deodorant, and grabbing her bag she ran down the stairs and out the front door as fast as she could. She was running so fast that her legs began to feel numb.
Even though the bluenette had barely any time to primp she still managed to look good. She checked her phone. 8:15 am.
"Shit!" Lapis panted as she tried to run impossibly faster in the direction of Beach City High School.
---------------------------------------
Peridot watched the clock with anticipation as she clicked her pen. "Halfway through first hour and not one text from Lapis at all. I didn't see her this morning either..."
The blonde sighed audibly, catching Ruby's attention from behind her. She felt a tap on her shoulder followed by a rough voice. "Hey Peridot. Everything ok? You look kinda down." Ruby whispered. The nerd adjusted her glasses and whispered back. "It's nothing. I'm just a little tired."
A bare-faced lie.
Peridot felt like she was dying inside. She was feeling so many emotions and thinking so many things.
Did Amethyst tell Lapis about their conversation last night? Does Lapis feel the same? Did Lapis not want to be friends anymore? What was Amethyst planning? Why hasn't Lapis texted back yet?
So many thoughts and questions raced through the spikey-blonde's mind. She began to sweat.
The only solution she could think of was ignoring and avoiding Lapis until next Saturday at her 17th birthday party. It would be hard, considering that they are lab partners in 2nd hour.
"My schoolwork is more important than some dumb love affair..." she thought to herself.
Avoiding Lapis didn't seem like a very good option after all. That would be putting their Science grades at stake. Peridot sighed. There is no escaping this...
Pretending like nothing ever happened between them at the Big Donut yesterday seemed like a better choice. Deeply repressing her feelings for Lapis was completely mandatory at this point.
"Yeah, that sounds good. I'll just play dumb and act like I don't care." She thought to herself.
The ticking of the clock and todays class lecture from Ms. Sardonyx interrupted her deep concentration.
--------------------------------
Lapis gasped for air as she burst through the front doors of the school. She staggered towards the direction of the girls' bathroom and entered. After regaining her composure, fixing her makeup in the mirror, and spraying on some perfume, she decided to check her phone.
Amongst all of the social media notifications and texts from people at school, there were three text messages and one missed call from Amethyst, and two text messages from Peridot.
Lapis trembled as she immediately opened the texts from Peridot, ignoring all of the other notifications.
"Peridot: Goodmorning."
"Peridot: Where are you?"
Lapis couldn't help but smile and immediately reply.
"Lapis: Hey! I'm so sorry. I literally just woke up half an hour ago and realized I was super late for school. I overslept."
As she sent the text, she bit her lip and began to type another.
"Lapis: I can't wait to see you next hour :)"
Before she could even process what she had typed, she sent the message to Peridot and instantly regretted it.
"Fuck! Did that sound too clingy?!" She whispered to herself. She began to panic a little until she remembered the texts from her best friend Amethyst. She opened the texts and read them.
"Amethyst: Yo, I have a quick question. Is Peridot coming to your birthday party next weekend?"
"Amethyst: You not coming to school today or what? Where the hell are you??"
"Amethyst: Text me back ASAP"
Lapis rolled her eyes. Since when did Amethyst care so much about Peridot coming to her party?
She texted a quick reply.
"Lapis: Hey Amy. I got to school just now. Why do you want to know if Peridot is coming to my party?"
The bluenette barely looked away from her phone when Amethyst responded.
"Geez. It's like that thing is part of her body." Lapis thought.
"Amethyst: I just need to know. It's important X3"
"Lapis: Well if you really need to know so bad, then yes, Peridot is coming to my party."
"Amethyst: Sweeeeeet"
Lapis furrowed her eyebrows as her thumbs quickly tapped the screen.
"Lapis: DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING SOMETHING MEAN TO HER!"
"Amethyst: Relax, Lappy. I'm planning a positive gesture."
Lapis sighed.
"What on earth is she up to this time?"
She locked her phone, dropped it in her bag, and decided to go to the rest of her first hour.
----------------------------------
The bell rang loud and shrill, signaling the end of first hour. Kids piled into the hallways from every direction, pivoting to their next classes. In the midst of all this commotion was a struggling Peridot trying to work her way through the bustling crowd of sleepy teens. She pushed and shoved through them as quickly as she could, although she was only moving a couple inches at a time.
"Screw all of these fucking clods. I can't wait to graduate and get out of this hell dimension."
At last after being bumped and pin-balled around the hallways she finally made it to her 2nd period; Science.
As soon as she walked in her eyes caught sight of Lapis sitting gracefully at her desk, her smooth toned legs crossed while her chin rested in her palm. The sharp edges of her jawline stood out amongst her flowing blue curls that sat perfectly on her head.
The nerd's heart almost stopped. The sight before her gave her butterflies in her stomach.
"On second thought... this place is heaven. Look at that angel..."
Peridot chuckled. "Good one, Dot."
Remembering that they were lab partners for the Chemistry unit, she made her way over to the direction of the blue-haired goddess. Before she could open her mouth to bid Lapis a hello, Jasper shoved her out of the way and took the seat next to Lapis.
The bully began to talk to Lapis while she continued to look forward. A fire lit inside of Peridot's heart and sparked a feeling she has never felt before. She felt braver than usual.
"Excuse me Jasper, could you sit somewhere else? That spot is already taken."
The whole class seemed to be watching at this point. Peridot even caught Lapis's attention. The bluenette looked horrified.
Jasper quickly spun around in her chair.
"What did you say to me runt?"
The huge jock stood up, towering over the small blonde and pointed a finger at Peridots chest.
"You've got a lot of nerve telling me to move. I outta knock you on your ass for sassing me like that!"
Peridot narrowed her eyes and adjusted her glasses. "Would you mind getting your finger out of my face? It's making me incredibly uncomfortable."
Lapis covered her mouth and chuckled, which only fueled Peridots courage.
Jasper, on the other hand, only became more furious. She grabbed Peridot by her shirt roughly.
"Have you forgotten your place, freak?! Step off before I pummel you into the ground!"
Before the situation escalated even more, Mr. Jacombi walked in.
"What's going on in here? I can't even leave for five minutes before you unruly teenagers start a fight with each other!"
Peridot grabbed Jasper's wrist. "Let go of me."
Jasper scowled bitterly before releasing Peridot's shirt, causing the nerd to stumble backwards and almost fall. "You're lucky the teacher came in at just the right time, runt."
The huge bully flopped back down into the seat next to Lapis with a look of victory on her face.
Peridot solemnly walked to a lone table in the back of the classroom.
"Well. This couldn't get any worse. Jasper is gonna try to kick my ass any chance she gets." The nerd thought to herself as she sat down in her chair.
"Now, without any further interruptions..." Mr. Jacombi's voice boomed as he looked from Jasper to Peridot, clearly annoyed.
"Everyone sit with their new lab partners so we can begin our Chemistry unit."
Peridot smiled wide as everyone scrambled to get to their partners. Through the crowd of her classmates she could see Lapis gracefully get up out of her chair and make her way across the classroom to where Peridot was sitting. Her breath hitched at the sight in front of her. Blue hair flowing beautifully like the ocean, hips swaying back and forth with each step she took, and crystal blue eyes locked on her own. The expression on Lapis's face was unreadable... but in a way Peridot felt that it was a good expression. A half-smile like Mona Lisa and a warm look in her eyes. The blonde could have sworn her heart stopped. She counted her heartbeats per second.
"One... two... three... four... seems normal..."
The bluenette smiled and sat down next to her, shyly bidding her a greeting with her soft sensual voice. "Hi."
Peridot blushed deeply as goosebumps crept up her body. "H-hey..." She stuttered.
At that moment an angry face from across the room caught Peridots attention. Jasper glared burning holes into the nerd and mouthed the words "You're dead meat" before turning around and slamming her fists on the table.
The smaller girl gulped and pulled at the collar of her shirt. "Yikes..."
Lapis chuckled. "So! It looks like we got to sit together after all!"
Peridot cleared her throat nervously. "U-uh, yeah... I guess we did..."
The long silence between them was unbearable. Everyone around them bantered amongst themselves, and yet it still felt so silent. Peridot quickly flashed her eyes up to look at Lapis, who was already staring at the blonde. The bluenette blushed and turned her head, averting her gaze. "S-so... um... I have a question..."
Peridot bugged her eyes out and swallowed the knot in her throat. "Y-yes?"
Lapis picked at a small scab on her arm and flashed her oceanic eyes down towards her lap.
"Are you coming to my birthday party next weekend?" She asked in a small, soft, fragile voice.
Peridots heart skipped a beat.
"Fuck. What do I say..?"
"Yeah, of course." The nerd replied with a smile.
Peridot mentally screamed at herself. "You fucking pushover! What happened to playing dumb and acting like you don't care?!"
Lapis's face lit up with childlike innocence. Her smile grew wide and revealed her dimples, and her eyes were full of complete and utter happiness. As soon as Lapis looked Peridot in the eyes, the blonde blushed and looked away.
"Oh, good! For a while there, I thought you weren't gonna come."
Lapis reached her hand out towards Peridots arm and held it lightly, ducking her head down to meet Peridots gaze. Peridot tensed all of the muscles in her body and felt her face heat up profusely.
"To be completely honest, I'm more worried about you showing up than anyone else..."
Peridot felt her heart beating faster than ever before. It was beating so fast that she thought it was gonna explode. At that moment, she made the horrible mistake to look into the taller girl's crystal blue eyes that were filled with exuberance. No matter how hard Peridot tried she could not look away from the sight in front of her.
"Oh my stars..."
After several moments of staring into each others eyes, Lapis looked away. She blushed and sat normally in her chair again.
"I really hope you're coming for sure, Peri..." Lapis spoke softly.
Peridot gulped and nodded as her cheeks still burned red. Regardless of the fears in the back of her mind, she decided that wether or not she got humiliated, at least she would be with Lapis.
"I'm going, Lapis. I promise."
Lapis held out her pinkie and scowled, crinkling up her little nose in the cutest way. "Pinky promise?"
The childish act made Peridot chuckle. "She is so pure... innocent..."
The nerd entwined her pinky with Lapis' to officialize the promise.
"Adorable... beautiful..."
The bluenette smiled happily. "Thank you. It means a lot to me..."
The blonde's eyes were locked on Lapis, admiring all of her perfections. She couldn't look away.
"Yeah, no problem..."
Mr. Jacombi spoke loudly.
"Alright class, now that everyone has found their partners let's begin the introduction to Chemistry."
Peridot mentally facepalmed as she tore her eyes away from the blue-haired goddess sitting beside her.
"Jesus Christ, what am I getting myself into?"
