Peridot watched the clock intensely, waiting as the minutes turned into seconds. The lunch bell rang loud and shrill, signaling the students to pile out of the door and get some food. Although being shoved by 30 people while trying to get out of a classroom is quite frustrating, Peridot couldn't help but feel ecstatic for the events that would follow. She was going to hangout with Lapis for lunch, just the two of them!
Peridot rushed to the Student Parking entrance, and as soon as it came into view, so did a blue head of hair. The bluenette was leaned up against the wall next to the entrance, typing on her phone with a concentrated look on her face. Lapis looked up and spotted the blonde, a huge smile forming on her face.
"Hey Peri! It took you long enough to get here!" She exclaimed.
Peridot rolled her eyes. "It's been thirty seconds since the bell rang. And didn't I tell you not to call me Peri?"
Lapis grabbed Peridot by the wrist and dragged her outside.
"I like calling you Peri, so deal with it. Also I don't want people to see us leaving or they will follow us to the Big Donut. I just want to get out of here and have a peaceful lunch without a crowd following me all the time."
Peridot nodded, walked over to her car, and unlocked her car door.
Lapis giggled at the green Jeep before her. "Of course it's green."
Peridot blushed. "Hey! It's a sensible color!"
Lapis shrugged. "I prefer blue."
They hopped into Peridots car and embarked on their journey to the local donut shop for lunch.
As Peridot drove off the school campus, she shot Lapis a glance and handed her a phone jack. "If you want to listen to some music, you can put on whatever you like."
Lapis smiled her dainty, gorgeous smile, and took the phone jack from Peridots pale hand. Her fingers brushed Peridots slightly, making the blonde shiver and put her hand back on the steering wheel, a massive blush spreading across her freckled cheeks.
Moments after Lapis fiddled with her phone and plugged it into the phone jack, a familiar intro of guitar began to flow through Peridots ears.
She glanced at Lapis, who was looking down at her lap and scrolling through her phone.
"You listen to this song?" Peridot said, eyes wide and filled with surprise. Lapis nodded. "This is one of my favorite songs. I listen to it all the time."
Peridot gasped. "Me too!"
They both glanced at each other and began to sing the first line to the song Island In The Sun.
-----------------------------------------
As the song ended, Peridot pulled into the parking lot of the Big Donut. It wasn't busy. Only a few vehicles were scattered around the shop. Peridot jumped out of her car and ran around to the passenger side. Before Lapis could open the car door herself, Peridot opened it for her. Lapis blushed and stepped out of the green Jeep, avoiding Peridots emerald gaze. "T-thanks..." she murmured.
Peridot slammed the door shut and locked her car. "No prob Bob." She said cheerfully.
"It's Lapis..." Lapis stammered, running her slender fingers through her blue bangs.
After an awkward silence, Peridot cleared her throat. "So... erm... shall we go in?" The bluenette nodded and looked down. Peridot shuffled her feet and walked towards the entrance, Lapis following close behind.
A bell rang when Peridot opened the door. The smell of sweet, freshly baked goods flooded the establishment. Lapis's eyes were wide with excitement as she looked around at the food ads and the freezers on the right side of the shop.
At the counter was a tall red-headed boy and a short blonde girl. The boy looked bored and tapped his phone lazily while the girl stood attentive with a welcoming smile plastered on her face. "Welcome to the Big Donut! What would you like?"
Peridot walked up to the counter while Lapis drew on the frosted glass of the freezer with her finger. The small blonde girls name tag read "Sadie".
"Hello Sadie. I would like a small coffee and two Boston cremes, and uh-"
Peridot looked over at Lapis who was still drawing on the freezer. She childishly giggled and continued to draw whatever she was drawing. Sadie laughed.
Peridot cleared her throat. "Laz what do you want."
Lapis looked over at Peridot with a huge, wild grin on her face.
"Look, Peri! It's you and me holding hands!"
Peridot blushed and face palmed. Cute little silhouettes of Lapis and Peridot were etched into the frost of the freezer door and they were INDEED holding hands.
"Jesus Christ, I'm trying to order. Get over here." chuckled Peridot, still blushing quite a bit. The cashier smiled warmly.
"Awe! You guys are such a cute couple!" She said.
Lapis smiled. "Thank you!" She said happily.
Peridot looked up at Lapis dumbfounded and Lapis looked back, a teasing look in her eyes.
The tall boy scoffed and walked to the back room. Sadie rolled her eyes.
"Sorry about Lars. He's having a bad day."
Peridot blushed even more while thinking about Sadie's statement and how Lapis answered. Lapis just stood next to her smiling... as if nothing ever happened.
"God, she's beautiful..." Peridot thought.
The bluenette cleared her throat. "I'll have an iced mocha and two powdered jelly donuts please!"
"Alrighty! That'll be $7.89!" The small girl sang out.
Lapis groaned.
Peridot rolled her eyes and pulled out her wallet. "I'll pay, Lapis."
"Peri! You don't have to do that!" Lapis said, clearly suprised.
"I was going to anyways."
Lapis blushed awkwardly, shifting her shoes against the gritty tile of the shop. Why are people so mean to such a nice person? Lapis blushed even harder as she studied how Peridot handed the money to Sadie. Her nimble, pale fingers trembled and she dropped her hand back down to her side.
Lapis tilted her head slightly, still watching the blondes hand. Her fingers twitched impatiently. The bluenette looked up to Peridots face and saw a bead of sweat begin to drip past her eyebrow.
That's when Lapis came to a sudden realization.
Peridot doesn't communicate with people. EVER. And when she does, it's probably because she has to.
She's forcing herself to do this for Lapis. The thought warmed her heart and soul in a way that she had never experienced before. Moments later, without thinking, Lapis reached out and grabbed Peridots hand to comfort her. She entwined her fingers with Peridots and felt her cold hand twitch.
All at once, Peridot froze. Her eyes bugged out so wide that they looked like saucers and her milky-white freckled face turned a warm pink color. Lapis giggled and squeezed Peridots hand reassuringly. "Thank you for doing this for me. I know this is way out of your comfort zone," she whispered.
Peridot smiled a small, shy smile and avoided looking at Lapis. This made Lapis laugh.
"She's so damn cute!" Lapis mentally screamed. "Jesus Christ, what am I even thinking?"
That's when Lapis realized she was still holding Peridots hand. Peridot had come to the same realization, and almost instantly their hands released. The sensation made Lapis feel like her hand was being tore off... she didn't want to let go...
Sadie set two small bags on a tray with the coffees.
"Enjoy your coffee and donuts!"
Lapis smiled warmly at the small cashier. "We will, thank you."
Peridot picked up the tray and carried it over to a table in the far corner of the shop. Lapis followed her and they sat down to eat their donuts together. Peridot exhaled loudly as she picked up a Boston creme and shoved it into her mouth. Lapis watched her while sipping on her iced coffee.
Peridots cheeks were full of the chocolatey treat, which made the bluenette giggle.
"You're so cute, Peri." She said warmly while setting her elbows on the table and resting her chin in her palms, looking through half-lidded eyes at the smaller girl.
Peridot nearly choked and blushed, looking at Lapis with those wide, bright green eyes of hers.
There was chocolate on both corners of Peridots lips, so Lapis licked her thumb and advanced to wipe it off for her. Peridot flinched as Lapis wiped the frosting away, watching her crystal blue eyes. The blue-haired girl looked up and their eyes met, sending warmth throughout their bodies. For several moments they stared, blue gazing into green. Lapis inched her face forward slightly, and for a moment Peridot could have swore that she saw the bluenettes eyes flicker down to look at her lips, and then up again. Beads of sweat formed on Peridots forehead as she felt Lapis's warm breath ghost over her mouth and chin. Their faces were inches apart, so close that Peridot could see the details of the taller girls soft, flawless skin.
"Oh my stars. OH MY STARS!" Peridot mentally screamed.
The bluenette blinked several times before looking away and returning to sip on her coffee.
Peridot shivered. "Did that just happen?"
Lapis cleared her throat, rubbing her nose and blushing. "T-there was uh... chocolate on your face. I-I got it though..."
Peridot tried mustering up a smile. "Thanks, Lapis."
Lapis looked at the blonde and smiled shyly, reaching for her jelly donut and taking a bite.
Peridot tried to remain calm on the outside, when really she was freaking out on the inside. "Did Lapis almost kiss me?"
