namjoon was preparing something for the girls to munch on while they worked on their coloring books he had bought them not too long ago.
they had specifically told him that they wanted the bright purple princess coloring book, not the other ones. he had also gone out of his way to buy the girls some extra crayons instead of markers, for they were much cleaner and mess free.
the girls' parents have been out all day since this morning and namjoon had not received a single message from his brother.
but he had received a few from jimin.
everything would stop the minute his phone would light up with another notification, alerting him to check his phone that instant.
he was such a screw up. why did he tell jimin he was free tonight? he didn't want to cancel on the boy for fear of turning his night bitter after being so excited today for their date.
but what else was he supposed to do?
his finger hovered over the call button hesitantly. maybe he could work something out with the shorter male.
without a second thought to add on to his reluctance, he pressed the button and held his breath as the sound of the ringing vibrated in his ear.
he anxiously waited for jimin to pick up as his mind trailed on to things he would tell the boy, he tried to prepare a few phrases when he'd answer but it all went to waste when--
"hello?.. namjoon?" the boy said, his voice sounded tired probably from another stressful day at work.
namjoon instantly forgot everything he was going to recite to the boy and stuttered. "h-hi uh.. jimin what's up.. u-um how are you?" he nervously replied and cursed at himself for being such an idiot.
jimin laughed from the other side of the line. "i'm fine. why are you calling? are you ready to go out already?" jimin said. his voice slightly altering and sounding more cheery.
"actually about that.. i-i got called to take care of my nieces tonight. i don't mean to cancel on you, i really don't. i feel terrible, i was looking forward to it, honest-"
"hey, don't worry about it. i understand. maybe some other day then? but don't leave me hanging." he teased a little.
"maybe you could come over for a bit.. if you don't mind being with the girls after school hours-- erm daycare hours." namjoon chuckled.
"are you sure?.. i don't mean to intrude or anything of the sort."
namjoon was certain his brother wouldn't mind if he invited someone over if the house was kept nice and intact, after all namjoon did do a nice job caring for his nieces. he was sure his nieces wouldn't mind either, they'd be more than happy with the extra company.
"positive. we can watch a movie or something and perhaps play dress up. the girls always like to do that."
jimin smiled at the mere idea of that. "yes. i'd love that. send me the address. i'll be on my way."
"alright see you in a few."
and with that, both boys ended the call with a drawn out sigh, butterflies tingling in their bellies, not knowing what to expect of the night.
namjoon walked over to the girls and handed them their grapes as he placed a gentle kiss on their head.
"thank you uncle joon." they said and smiled up at their elder.
"don't mention it kiddos."
**************
it took one ring from the doorbell for namjoon to bolt from the couch and sprint to the door.
to his dismay it wasn't jimin but his brother and his wife.
she sure did look pissed.
she angrily put her bag on the kitchens marble countertop, the second the leather made contact with it, the yelling began.
"for christ's sake! all you ever do is whine! this is why we can't have a single evening out without you ruining it. i've had enough soohyun!"
namjoon noticed the two girls tense up and he quickly ushered them to their room.
"how about we play a game? do you guys know how to play uno?" he suggested but the girls weren't interested. their demeanor quickly shifted as their shoulders sunk and their lips quivered, not very tolerant of yelling.
they both broke out crying, tears quickly staining their cheeks as they rolled down and splashed on their bed, forming a visible puddle.
namjoon knew he wouldn't be able to make them stop crying, he couldn't even begin to imagine how broke their little hearts must be. in their minds their life was perfect, carefree.. couldn't even begin to dream that their parents were fighting endlessly during the night behind closed doors after they had fallen asleep.
no little rhyme or saying from their uncle could put an end to the girls sadness.
"hey girls listen.. come here." he said and pulled them both into his chest, engulfing them in a tight embrace, hoping to ease their emotions and give them some warmth from the cruel yelling going on outside.
"whatever happens between them, will never affect how much they love you. adults.. they have pretty hard lives no matter how much you refuse to believe so. we put on our happy faces for your girls so you don't have to worry about anything. but remember i'm always here no matter what. and if i need to love you two times as much, then i will." he said, he was answered back with a few sniffles and a nod from seoyeon.
as namjoon was going to open his mouth again to speak the doorbell rang once again. namjoon had forgotten to inform jimin that his family was now back. panic spread across his face, there was too much havoc going on right now for jimin to walk in.
namjoon set the girls down gently and told them to wait for him until he got back. he walked to the door but to his surprise soohyun has already opened it.
"hello.." jimin said and bowed politely.
