It's been almost a week since I got back to the group and Lotor seemed pretty out of it. I know he just lost his sister Allura, but even Shiro was handling her death better. Shiro was still our leader and leading us the same as before I left. Lotor was disappearing all the time. It was really starting to get on my nerves.
"Keith," I turned around and looked at the person who spoke. "Can you take watch?" Shiro asked me. I nodded.
"Get some sleep, Shiro. You look like crap." He chuckled a little at my words, but it soon turned into coughing. He staggered away from me and I watched, worried, as he went into Pidge and Matt's tent and zipped it closed.
I climbed up a tree and looked around the camp. Matt was polishing his stick thingy, holding it up in the sun to admire his work every once in a while. Pidge was practicing throwing her knives. Lance was drawing something in his sketch book. And Lotor was nowhere in sight... Seriously? I'm getting really sick of him wandering off on his own.
I kept watch for a couple hours before Lotor finally appeared. He walked out from behind a tree, looking really pale. I mean, paler than usual. He's already pretty pale. But this is ridiculous.
I climbed down from the tree and went up to him.
"Hey. You doing okay, Lotor?" He looked up at me and for a second I thought he was one of the dead. His eyes were really hazy and he had his mouth partially opened. Then he blinked and shook his head a bit.
"I'm okay, Keith. Really I am." He said with a small smile. I gave him a skeptical look.
"If you say so... Why don't you go rest? Pidge is sleeping in your tent. Shiro took her sleeping bag."
"That's fine. I have a blanket I can use. Besides, there's plenty of room for two in that tiny tent of mine." He went off to his tent and I looked after him, worried.
I shook it off and woke up Matt, telling him it was his watch. I joined Lance in front of our tent to watch the sunset. He was still drawing. When I started to see stars in the night sky, he dropped his pencil and put the sketch pad in my lap.
"What's this?" I asked, picking it up to look at it. My gaze softened when I saw what he drew. The park we always went to before the world ended. The old, crumbling seesaw. The rusty swings. The graffiti covered jungle gym. Monkey bars with peeling paint. All so old and violating health codes... But that was our spot.
I stood up from the old lawn chair I was sitting in and straddled Lance. He grabbed the back of my neck and smashed his lips onto mine. I kept my mouth closed when he bit my lower lip and he growled in impatience. He slipped his cold hands under my shirt, making me gasp. He stuck his tongue in my mouth and we fought for dominance. I won and my hand started to make it's way to his crotch...
When a scream tore through the air.
We jumped up, ignoring our boners, and ran in the direction of Pidge's scream. I met Matt at the tent she was sleeping in with Lotor. Matt got there first and when he opened the tent, he fell back with a sob. I looked inside and my heart twisted. A whimpering Pidge lay in the middle of the tent, a bite in her neck. Lotor lay dead, a knife embedded in his skull.
Lance made his way inside and lifted Pidge off the ground. Matt stood up and took his sister out of the Cuban boy's arms.
"Katie.. I'm sorry. I'm so so so sorry. You didn't deserve this.. Baby sister, don't go. Please.." Her eyes clouded. Matt held her close to his chest and screamed in agony. I turned away, unable to watch. My eyes met Shiro's and I took in how crappy he looked. His face flushed and he was panting. I quickly went to him and felt his forehead.
"You're burning up.." I mumbled.
He started to cough and stuttered out "Doesn't matter." I snapped my head up and looked him right in the eye.
"Don't you dare say that. We just lost more people. Again. Don't tell me you don't matter. Because you do." I told him. He nodded and went back to the tent he was sleeping in. I stumbled over to the tent I shared with Lance and collapsed on top of the sleeping bag. I could feel tears start to build up in my eyes, but quickly blinked them away. I can't cry. I need to stay strong. For Matt, who is mourning the loss of his sister. For Shiro, my older brother, who has the flu. I need to stay strong for Lance... I can't show him how broken I really am.
I curled into a ball and listened to my own breathing until I was finally able to fall asleep.
Lance sighed and went into the tent he shared with Keith. His eyes fell upon his sleeping boyfriend and he smiled softly. He removed Keith's shoes and covered him with the sleeping bag. He got in the sleeping bag with him and wrapped his arms around him. Keith turned around to face Lance in his sleep and Lance wiped away the tear that was running down his face, kissing his forehead. Keith sighed and smiled, falling from his light, troubled sleep into a deep sleep that relaxed all of his features.
