We stumbled down the hallway, turning left and right, towards the gym.

Finally, after what seemed like ages, we reached the room.

Sophie opened the door, stepping inside with her rifle and swinging it around.

The rest of us followed her lead, Mason ahead with his pistol, along with a flamethrower; Abigail with her rifle and grenades, and finally, me in the back with my rocket launcher and two pistols in my hands.

The air vent busted open. Zombies began walking outside in a trance-like state, only to be shot in the head—by someone behind us.

I turned around, pointing my pistols at the boy. Then I recognized him.

Sterling.

"Sterling!" Abigail and I gasped.

He smiled, but there was something different in the way his lips pulled upwards. "Hey, guys."

"You're okay!" Abigail's face broke out in relief. We really were in this together.

As a way to ruin the mood, Mason spoke. "Who is that guy? Should I shoot him?" he asked.

Sophie agreed to this. "Yeah, should I also shoot him?"

"This is Sterling." I nodded at Sterling. "Sterling, this is the gang."

Sterling gave us a solemn nod. "Nice to meet you. Now let's kill."

Bullets stitched a line in the wooden floor. I froze.

"Don't move, or you'll be shot." Jax told us, along with other guards next to him.

"Yeah! You better freeze!" a guard taunted us.

The guard next to him punched him in the head. "Shut up."

Sterling put his hands behind his back and slowly reloaded his gun

He retreated into darkness, using it for cover, then shot at Jax.

The guards, too surprised to see their leader shot in the arm, froze in place.

Sterling slowly picked them off, one by one, until Jax was the only one still alive.

We climbed up, and found Jax clenching his arm in the tower. He stared at us, then turned to Abigail.

"I'm sorry."

With that, he shot himself in the head.
