Andy P.O.V.
What she said hit me like a ton of bricks.
I.Was.Being.Adopted.
"No," the word spilled from my mouth before I could stop it, but honestly, I did not regret it.
I already had a family, one I loved with all my heart. I did not need a new one. Jackie and Doc and Mrs.D and Commander and Virus and Apex and Cee and Bulk and Bee and Smokey are my family. I did not need these two people to just randomly show up and think they can force me into a new family. A new life.
They all looked at me, surprised, "Andy this is not up for discussion. The papers have already been prepared," the hag hissed at me.
I straightened out, making myself taller, though I didn't need to do that considering that she barely came up to my chest, "Look, lady, I have my right to refuse to do something. I am old enough to take care of myself, and, as I have proved many times over, very capable of handling potentially dangerous objects. Oh and speaking of potentially dangerous objects, you should be shut down for endangering minors."
The old woman sputtered for excuses and explanations but I stopped her by holding a hand up, "You commissioned an underage girl, who is just barely legally allowed to use a toaster to fix the central air conditioning unit of this residence. And correct me if I'm wrong but the tools required for such a task can be dangerous if used by an inexperienced person. Now I am very aware that I can, in fact, use all these tools perfectly but if you had given this task to someone other then myself, they could seriously harmed themselves. Not to mention that this unit runs on electricity, which has the potential to kill a child."
The two men stared at me for a brief moment with surprise clear in their expressions while the old woman fumed with anger, her face an unnatural shade of purple.
The blacked haired one stepped forward and regarded the AC unit for a minute before nodding, "The kid's right. If she hadn't known how to use the tools this could have killed her. Not to mention the amount of electricity this thing could release if one little thing was done wrong." he looked at me with a curious look in his eyes, "How did you avoid making that mistake?"
I shrugged. There was no way in the pits that I'm telling him the truth so I lied throw my teeth, "I have a couple of friends who taught me everything there is to know about fixing machines. And making them."
He nodded but I had a feeling he didn't entirely believe me, "Will," he turned to the brown-haired man, who looked up from his one-sided conversation with the hag, "She'll do just fine."
Will nodded and smiled, "I would like to sign those papers now." the hag seemed relieved to get rid of me, "but don't believe for one minute that we wouldn't bring this ..little.. issue up to the child care service officers."
The hag's shoulders sagged but she nodded and escorted Will up the stairs anyway, most likely to get those adoption papers signed. I don't know why but I didn't protest this time. Something about them made me want to trust these to men. Maybe it was they were military and I could relate to that. Or it might have been the strangely familiar blue eyes of the black haired man. Either way, I found that I was fine with being adopted by them.
"If I were you, I'd pack my things kid." and with that, the gruff man headed up the stairs.
After a moment or two of hesitation I followed, my bags in hand, though instead of heading for the main office, where the other three had, I headed up the stairs and to the room I had woken up in. While I didn't enjoy the style choices of 16-year-old me, I still needed clothes.
It had taken about half an hour for the papers to be official. In that time I had managed to fill another backpack with the minimal clothing I own and make the bed for the next person. I hoped Will could do something to get this place shut down so another youngling didn't have to endure this torture.
In the other fifteen minutes before the men and the hag had left the office, I spent sitting in an uncomfortable chair in the main lobby, I had filled Jackie in on my situation. He was surprised, to say the least. I had to explain why I didn't protest more profusely at least twice. When he had heard about my speech about the hag and this place I could feel his pride and adoration flood into my spark. Needless to say, my confidence soared. His presence comforted me more then I could express with words but I had a feeling Jackie understood. The amount of reassurance had me positively beaming by the time the two men and the hag exited the main office.
"She's all your's," the hag sneered at me as I got up and smiled at her, fueling her rage.
"Oh, I forgot to mention earlier," I addressed the hag, ignoring the curious looks then men shot me, "The air conditioning system is going to cost about a hundred and fifty to fix - not included the broken parts that need replacing, of course."
The hag looked like she was going to lunge at me and try to strangle me. I merely grinned as she turned and stormed back into her office. Once she was out of sight, I turned to the two men, the grin never leaving my face.
"I don't believe that we have ever been formally introduced. My name is Andy."
The brown haired one smiled at me, reluctance and amusement mixing in his opt-eyes, "I'm Will and that's Ron," he pointed to the black haired man next to him with his thumb, "Welcome to the Lennox family Andy."
